New Wineries!
(and some very exciting collectables)

November 2014

Each and every year we strive to bring new and exciting wineries into the Ontario market.  Our selection process is very stringent and when we do find a winery making wines that are exciting, delicious and above all else very fairly priced, we want you to know! So, let us introduce from Sonoma County, Martin Ray Winery; from Chablis, Domaine Christian Moreau Pere & Fils. and from the Napa Valley, Red Cap Vineyard and La Sirena.

We also have, returning to stock, four very collectable Napa Cabernets that will make our collectors very happy to see in Ontario again! You'll have to scroll down......

Please visit us on the web and pass this along to anyone you know who loves wine like we do.

Cheers!
Chris.

Martin Ray Winery

When we met with proprietor Courtney Benham we were absolutely thrilled with this winery operation and the wines they produce.  Based in Santa Rosa, but having long-term vineyard contracts across Northern California, Martin Ray Winery produces two strata of wines - Martin Ray and Angeline.

Following the sale of Blackstone Winery, a mega-brand developed by Courtney and his brother in the 1980's, Courtney stumbled into a cache of library wines made by the late Mr. Martin Ray, one of Santa Cruz appellation's most historic figures.  Inspired by the quality of the decades old wines, he bought the defunct brand and has spent the last 20 years developing this winery.

Sonoma County
Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
$27.95 per bottle, cases of 12

GOLD MEDAL WINNER!
2014 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

This Cabernet delivers exactly what one wants from Sonoma County Cabernet - lushness, soft tannins, savoury dark flavours and balancing acidity.  This is a great wine to have on hand for complementing dinner or just sipping al fresco.

Classic aromas of ripe cherry, pipe tobacco, cedar, spice and cola lure the taster to candied cherry flavours, finshing with soft leather and rich blackberry and plum.

Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2013
$27.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Longtime grower Ron Black nurtures ten prime acres of Pinot Noir grapes on his Tina Marie Vineyard in the Green Valley sub-appellation of Russian River Valley. Just five miles from the ocean, Tina Marie Vineyard enjoys cool evenings and warm days due to the fog that ebbs and flows through the Petaluma Wind Gap, allowing the grapes to develop exceptional flavour over an extended ripening season. A combination of the climate and unique Goldridge loam soil produces complex Pinot Noirs with intense berry and spice aromas and a palette of cherry, allspice and clove.

Just a few miles east of Tina Marie, Marty's #2 vineyard at Dutton Ranch produces high acid Pinot Noir fruit that brings rich, "chewy" body to the blend. Further south, Pinot Noir grapes coming from the Wat Vineyard are always the last to be picked, due to a cooler, coastal climate.

This is a classic Russian River Valley Pinot Noir with bright acidity and fresh fruit balance. Mouthwatering aromas of strawberry, black cherry, toffee and Asian spices give way to a silky, juicy mouthful of cherry, cranberry and spice flavours.

Angeline
"Reserve" Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
$21.45 per bottle, cases of 12

This wine presents itself as a very approachable, easy drinker, for both Cabernet Sauvignon aficionado and Red Wine drinker alike. The nose and front palate immediately display juicy black cherries, while grounding the mid-palate and finish in earthy graphite and green tea leaves, with a slightly toasty well-integrated finish.

Angeline Pinot Noir 2013
$20.95 per 750ml bottle, cases of 12
$13.45 per 375ml bottle, cases of 12

The California Pinot Noir is a blend of varied vineyards, and presents an easy-to-appreciate, spicy, juicy, vibrant, crunchy cranberry and Pink Lady apple flavoured beauty.

No need for food, ageing or ceremony with this Pinot Noir, just twist, pour and enjoy.

Domaine Christian Moreau Père & Fils.

Six generations of Moreaus have tended these vines since the inception of the company J. Moreau & Fils, in Chablis in 1814.  In 1972, after 11 years in the lumber business in Canada, Christian Moreau returned to Chablis with his Canadian wife, Christine, and their three sons, Philippe, Patrick and Fabien. Under the guiding hand of his father Guy, Christian began to learn and master the art of winemaking.

Fabien, the sixth generation of the family to be involved in winemaking, obtained his National Degree in Oenology in Dijon and a Masters in Business Administration at the E.N.I.T.A in Bordeaux.  He then went to New Zealand for a year to study the country's winemaking practices.

Then in December 2001, Fabien returned to Chablis and took over as Managing Director and Head Winemaker at the Domaine Christian Moreau Père & Fils.

Domaine Christian Moreau Père & Fils. was a participant in Wine Spectator's New York Wine Experience, which is possibly North America's greatest gathering of elite wineries from around the world.  They were one of only two Chablis producers included in 2014. That is quite an endorsement!

These wines are tremendously focused, elegant and fresh. We were thrilled by the entire lineup of wines from village to Grand Cru level and think that you will feel the same.

Christian Moreau Père & Fils. Chablis 2013
$29.95 per bottle, cases of 12

This vineyard is located in the village of Chablis, in the very heart of the Chablis country, on the left bank of the Serein River, with a south-south east exposure. It is located in the climat Les Pargues.  The soil is kimmeridgian calcareously clay which goes back to the upper Jurassic age.  The average vine age is over 50 years.

"The 2013 Chablis shows gorgeous depth and richness at this level. Peach, apricot pit, spice and honeyed notes flesh out in the glass. Slight elements of reduction are apparent today, but that should not be an issue once the wine goes into bottle.  2015+"
(88-90) points, Antonio Galloni, Aug 2014

Christian Moreau Père & Fils.
Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon
$40.45 per bottle, cases of 6

This vineyard benefits from an excellent south, south-east exposure. The soil is made up of kimmeridgian clay, a soil specific to the Chablis region. It is rich in fossil shells of a small oyster, Exogyra virgula, frequently found in the Chablis soil. The average age of these vines is almost 60 years.

"Moreau's 2013 Chablis Vaillon is rich, ample and expressive. Ripe yellow stone fruits, smoke, spice and menthol are some of the notes that blossom in the glass. The Vaillon is all about texture, yet also maintains gorgeous precision and a real sense of class. What a gorgeous wine this is. In 2013, about 40% of the wine was fermented in oak. 2015+"

(91-93) points, Antonio Galloni, Aug 2014

Christian Moreau Père & Fils.
Chablis 2012 Grand Cru Les Clos
"Clos de Hospices dans Les Clos"
$98.95 per bottle, cases of 6

This is such an amazing find for the Chablis lover.  "Le Clos des Hospices" is a Moreau family exclusivity, located in the vineyards that produce the Grand Cru Les Clos appellation.  The family's great-great grandfather acquired this parcel of land at the Hôpital de Chablis (Chablis Hospice) in 1904.

In the south exposure, the soil is composed of kimmeridgian marl-calcium carbonate (upper Jurassic), and is rocky with dense white clays.  The average age of these vines is over thirty years.

"Moreau's 2012 Chablis Les Clos Clos des Hospices is a big, big wine. Vinification in oak gives the Clos des Hospices gives the wine much of its volume. Still, there is plenty of detail for a wine of this size. The style is very much rich, layered and textured. How the oak integrates is a bit of an open question at this stage. Drink 2016+"

La Sirena

Screaming Eagle.  Two words that mean so much to fans of Napa Valley wines.  The ultimate in cult-collectability.  In 1996 the first vintage of this Oakville Cabernet was released to critical acclaim - 99 points Parker - and overnight winemaker Heidi Peterson-Barrett, a well established winemaker already, became a household name in wine circles.  Interestingly, nine years earlier, at age 25, Heidi was hired as winemaker for Buehler Vineyards, which is another of our winery partners.

Heidi, who loves the ocean and especially SCUBA diving, began making wines under her own label, La Sirena in 1994.  "I was looking for a name for my wine which would be fun and magical.  La Sirena, which means 'the Mermaid' in Italian and Spanish is a lovely expression of my two great passions!"

"La Sirena" Cabernet Sauvignon follows the same winemaking style and blend that she made in the past for Screaming Eagle, using Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot as a chef would spices, she builds a wine that is at once powerful, balanced, aromatic, structured and which finishes long.

La Sirena
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
$267* per bottle, cases of 6
*best estimate, arriving January 2015

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is a bit more powerful and structured than the 2009. It has less of the early appeal of its older sibling, but plenty of pleasure waiting in store. Smoke, licorice, blackberries and sweet spices are supported by firm, insistent tannins. This is a beautiful, striking wine. 2015 - 2030"

Red Cap Vineyards

Retiring from a career in Finance for IBM for a career as a chef, Tom Altemus attended California Culinary Academy in San Francisco where he graduated with high honours. He then went to work in some of California's best restaurants for such culinary legends as Michel Richard (Citrus) and Bradley Ogden (One Market); eventually taking a position at Brava Terrace Restaurant in St. Helena.

Outgrowing their Napa residence after the birth of their second child Tom and Desiree Altemus purchased a 10.5-acre property on Howell Mountain in 1998.  The rocky, volcanic soils and the uniqueness of the Howell Mountain microclimate produce fruit of exceptional character and quality.  Planted on virgin land in 2003 at an elevation of 1900 feet, the Aiken loam soil is deep, red, and peppered with fractured rock. The terrain is a rolling plateau at the top of the mountain. The vineyard yields about two tons of grapes per acre.

The grapes are organically grown and hand farmed. Alfonso Elena manages the vineyard. He has been farming grapes in Napa Valley for over 35 years with extensive hillside experience. His knowledge and experience is invaluable.

We think that these are exciting, delicious and very well-priced Howell Mountain Cabernet.

Red Cap Vineyards
Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
$91.95 per bottle, cases of 6

The bold black fruit Howell Mountain is so famous for is clear from the first whiff to the lingering finish. A deep and complex mid palate has black cherry, licorice, kirsch and leather mingling together. There are layers of mocha, sage, and black berries through out the finish. The tannins are nicely balanced with the acid and oak accents making this a harmonious wine that has plenty of ageing potential as well.

Only 280 cases of this wine were produced.  This is what Napa "hunters" look for - small production, elite terroir, outstanding vintage, organic farming, hand crafted wine.  My score for the 2010 would be in the 91-92 point realm, with possibly another point given the reasonable price.

And now, for the Napa Valley collectors..........

TierraRoja

Tierra Roja 2011 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
$197* per bottle, cases of 3
* best estimate, arriving January 2015

Tierra Roja remains one of our most exciting finds. This iron rich, steeply sloping vineyard is the "hub" of Oakville's greatest vineyards.  Above it sits Maya and Pedregal, to the south Screaming Eagle, Rudd and Plumpjack.

The 2011 Tierra Roja is a wine of exquisite balance and provocative energy.  While many vineyards bathed in mud during the rains of 2011, this vineyard shrugged off the storms to produce near-perfect grapes with an exceptional level of complexity and ripeness.

Cherry, raspberry, pencil lead, blueberry, cedar, tobacco leaf, and fresh bay are all among the descriptors for the 2011.  However, these notes do not even begin to describe the deliciousness and energy that are present.  Perhaps the greatest vintage of Tierra Roja ever made, the 2011 is a wine that will unfold it secrets in layers of pleasure that will run decades deep.

Ovid_Label

Ovid 2011 Napa Valley
$429.95 per bottle, cases of 3

"Ovid is one of the most exciting young wineries in Napa Valley..... It is tempting to think about Ovid in the context of other wineries on Pritchard Hill, as the estate lies just up the road from Colgin....Ovid is very clearly a special place with special people on a mission to make great wines. These new and upcoming releases are full of potential."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Dec 2011

"The 2011 Ovid is super-silky, finessed and beautiful. There is a bit less resonance and depth relative to most vintages, but the 2011 makes up for that with its aromatic complexity, pure expressiveness and long, resonant finish. With time in the glass, the spiced and floral notes become more apparent. The delicate, perfumed finish rounds things out beautifully. The 2011 is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, which is more Cabernet Sauvignon and less Franc than is usually the case. This is another striking wine from Ovid.  Drink 2015-2030."

Kapcsándy Estate Winery

Lou Kapcsándy is a man driven by one goal, to make California's best Cabernet, a true American "First Growth".

His successful construction business in Seattle afforded him the ability to assemble one of the best wine collections on the west coast, a distribution company specializing in Bordeaux and Hungarian wines and in 2000 he purchased the State Lane Vineyard in Yountville.  This vineyard had provided the backbone for the great Beringer Private Reserves of the 1980s and 1990s, however, phylloxera destroyed the vineyard in 1999.

Lou hired Marcassin's John Wetlaufer and Helen Turley to consult on the replanting which focused on microclimates within the vineyard and how best to make use of clonal selection and planting density.  A 14,000 square foot, state of the art production facility followed.

There is no doubt in my mind that Kapcsandy is a true American "First Growth" and will  in time, be recognized globally as one of the world's top wines.  The 2007 and 2008 Grand Vin received back-to-back 100 point scores from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.  The 2012 is currently scored (96-100).

KapcsandyGrandVin2008

Kapcsándy "Grand Vin" 2011
$445* per bottle, cases of 3
 * best estimate
Order now, this offer expires December 1, 2014

"As great as the 2010 is, the 2011 isn't too far behind. Silky, gracious tannins form the backbone in a refined, beautifully balanced Grand Vin long on class. Sweet, perfumed and utterly impeccable throughout, the 2011 is a Grand Vin simply superb. With time in the glass, the 2011 fleshes out beautifully, showing remarkable depth for the year. The 2011 is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. The higher percentage of Merlot is typical of a lot of blends in 2011."

KapcsandyEstateCuvee.jpg

Kapcsándy "Estate Cuvée" 2011
$190* per bottle, cases of 3
 * best estimate, arriving January 2015

"The 2011 Estate Cuvée is a drop dead gorgeous beauty. Sweet tobacco, wild flowers, mint, licorice, fennel and mint all meld together in a perfumed, gracious wine graced with stunning elegance and refinement. The 2011 is less obvious than either the 2010 or 2012, but it is more fragrant and perfumed. Clean, saline notes support the striking finish. The blend is 56% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc."
95+ points, Antonio Galloni, Nov 2013
