VilmartNV

Champagne Vilmart & Cie.
"Grand Cellier" NV
$72.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
arriving early February

Vilmart's non-vintage Brut is sourced from Premier Cru vineyards in Rilly, in the Montagne de Reims region of Champagne.    Known as "Baby Krug", Vilmart's style is luxurious and toasty because of barrel fermentation of the base wines, just as they do at Krug.  Vilmart's wines are much more wallet-friendly.

"Vibrant acidity structures this seamlessly integrated version, backing the layered flavours.  Shows lovely texture and length."

95 points, Wine Spectator, Dec 2013

"Laurent Champs crafts impeccable, elegant Champagnes of the highest level. The Vilmart Champagnes are so delicious when they are released I doubt too many are purchased for cellaring, but the reality is that the wines also age exceptionally well."
Wine Advocate, Nov 2012

Brunello Riserva

Altesino
Brunello di Montalcino "Riserva" 2007
$109.95 per bottle, six bottles per case

Altesino's Brunellos are grown high above the region's floor, leading to this house's finessed, elegant style.  Maturation in Slavonian oak casks, not French barriques, shows the true character of the Sangiovese and the terroir of Altesino.

"Fine wine with fabulous aromas of tangerines and peaches with plums. So aromatic. Full body, with super polished tannins and a long, long finish. Drink or hold."

95 points, JamesSuckling.com, Feb 2013

Montosoli

Altesino
Brunello di Montalcino "Montosoli" 2008
$109.95 per bottle, six bottles per case

This wine is sourced from Altesino's parcel of the famed Montosoli vineyard, and although it is only produced in great years, it is widely regarded as one of the region's top wines.

"Intense balsamic and mint notes make this red distinctive, along with currant, raspberry and floral touches. Silky, ripe and impressive, this shows elegance and a vibrant structure. Offers excellent length and resonance on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2032. 1,250 cases made."

95 points, June 2013 and #96 Wine of the Year Wine Spectator

Vigna del Sorbo

Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva
"Vigna del Sorbo" 2009
$72.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
arriving early February 2014

"Lovely ruby shade, fresh red fruit on the nose with lots of nuance - violets, white pepper and a hint of sweet oak.  Great volume on the palate, progressing through round and soft to long and grippy, with classic sour cherry and then just a touch of earthiness in the finish. Drink 2014-2025."
96 points, (19/20) Decanter magazine, Nov 2013

Flaccianello

Fontodi "Flaccianello della Pieve" IGT 2009
$105.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
very limited supply

Still one of the greatest values in high-end Tuscan wine, Flaccianello 2009 is a thoroughbred.  Annually this is one of Tuscany's top wines.

Wine Spectator featured the vineyard and winery in the Oct 31, 2013 issue, and has awarded it three "Top 10" placings in the last 10 years - #10 in 2004, #8 in 2009, #8 in 2010 and now #25 in 2013.

"The first impression of this red is purity and finesse, as black currant, raspberry and violet aromas and flavours stay focused and persistent. An earthy leather element and mineral notes chime in on the finish, backed by a vibrant structure. Sangiovese. Best from 2015 through 2032. 5,000 cases made."

96 points, Oct 2013 and #25 Wine of the Year Wine Spectator

Geyserville

Ridge "Geyserville" 2011
$50.95 per bottle, six bottles per case

If you subscribe to Connoisseur's Guide to California Wines (a very good publication by the way), you'll know what this 95 point score means to them.  This is one of the highest scores you're likely to see for a Zinfandel this year.

"78% Zinfandel; 16% Carignane; 4% Petite Sirah; and 2% Other.  Another stunner under the Geyserville moniker, this rich, nicely layered offering combines red and black berries with touches of dried leaves and black pepper in its mid-volume aromas. And, as promising as the nose seems to be, the wine is even more deeply packed on the palate where its blackberry, raspberry, darkly spiced fruit is joined by background notes of creamy oak. Latter palate tannin assures that this version of Geyserville will enjoy the long-aging abilities of its predecessors."

95 points, Connoisseur's Guide to California Wines, May 2013

Boudreaux Reserve

Boudreaux "Reserve" Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
$132.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
very limited supply

"Much in the style of Leonetti Cabernet, with the richness of Napa Valley fruit, this deeply satisfying, superripe wine is 100% varietal. Notes of cassis, fig and a hint of prune are swathed in deeper flavours of espresso and dark chocolate."
95 points, Wine Enthusiast, Sept 2012

David Schildknecht of Wine Advocate also awarded this 94 points and this note, "It exhibits amazing resonance and viscous cling yet (at 13.9%) with no hint of heat or alcoholic roughness, leading to a finish of fruit essences and confections that positively soars with ester-rich, near-spirituous yet not in the least raw intensity. This should be spellbinding to follow over at least the better part of the next decade."

Special Selection

Caymus "Special Selection"
Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
$142.95 per bottle, six bottles per case

Just released is the new 2011 Caymus "Special Selection", the only wine to have won Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in two different vintages.  This truly is a "special selection" of the best lots sourced from 8 viticultural areas of Napa Valley.

"A brilliant wine, and one of the stars of the vintage, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection boasts aromas of blueberry pie, blackberries, cassis and white flowers. This full-bodied, velvety textured, delicious 2011 is already drinking well, and should continue to do so for 10-12 years. It is a terrific success for the vintage."

95 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Oct 2013

Continuum

Continuum 2010 (Napa Valley Meritage)
$224.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
arriving early February 2014

"This has been an impressive, serious wine since the debut vintage, and Tim Mondavi's estate high on Pritchard Hill has fashioned a 2010 blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 11% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot. Gorgeously ripe, intricate and nuanced, with aromas of spring flowers and red and black fruits, a stunning texture, sweet tannin, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and undeniable elegance and finesse, this complex beauty cascades over the palate without a hard edge to be found. It is a tribute to Mondavi's long resume of skillful winemaking. Black currants, blueberries and a touch of raspberries are all compelling and persistent. Drink this gorgeous Napa red now and over the next 15+ years. "
97 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Oct 2013

DancingHares

Dancing Hares 2010 (Napa Valley Meritage)
$191.95 per bottle, six bottles per case

The definition of "Cult Cab" Dancing Hares is a 4.4 acre(!!) vineyard at the base of Howell Mountain.  The vineyard is managed by David Abreu, Napa's foremost grower, and the wines are made by Andy Erickson, formerly of Screaming Eagle.

"The 2010 Dancing Hares is deeper and fuller with more structure as well as a lot of the sensuality exhibited by the 2009. Composed of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot, it boasts a dense purple colour and notes of wet rocks, blueberries, black raspberries, mulberries, espresso and subtle background oak. The delicious aromatics are followed by a deep, supple, round, opulent wine with some tannin underlying the extravagant fruit. A beauty of purity and symmetry, it is capable of lasting two decades or more."

95 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Dec 2013

Quintessa

Quintessa 2010 (Rutherford Meritage)
$139.95 per bottle, six bottles per case

"The 2010 Quintessa is a dense, concentrated and powerful wine that brings aromas and flavours of sweet currant, blueberry, crème de cassis, hazelnut, herbs, cinnamon spices and dusty minerals. The texture is voluptuous with round, polished tannins that burst on palate. This wine continues to evolve with each second in the glass and leaves you with a long mouth-coating finish loaded with sweet dark fruits. Winemaker Charles Thomas and consultant Michel Rolland have done a fantastic job assembling this wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenére and you won't have to wait long to pull the cork, it is already showing fantastic."
96 points, Nov 2013 and #28 Wine of the Year,
International Wine Report

"It is so refined and tasty, in fact, that we can see how it will surely tempt early drinking, but, like all top-level Cabernet Sauvignons, it will show much more with age, and we urge that be allowed to rest for no fewer than six to eight years."
95 points, Connoisseur's Guide to California Wines, Aug 2013

Ovid_Label

Ovid 2010 (Napa Valley Meritage)
$299.95 per bottle, three bottles per case

"The flagship 2010 Ovid is just as impressive today as it was last year. A dark, dense beauty, the 2010 flows across the palate with stunning depth and purity. Mocha, espresso, graphite, wild flowers and intense dark fruit literally explode from the glass. The 2010 is exciting and viscerally thrilling from the very first taste. Seductive Cabernet Franc aromas are woven throughout, adding perfume, lift and an element of exoticism that is impossible to resist. The blend is 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot."
97 points, Antonio Galloni, Nov 2013

Hillside

Shafer "Hillside Select" Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
$310.95 per bottle, six bottles per case

If I had to pick my #1 Wine of the Year, I would have to say, without hesitation, 2009 Hillside Select.  The purity and poise of this wine is stunning.  To me this is definitive Napa Valley Cabernet - rich and powerful, fresh and aromatic, captivating and enthralling.  Enjoy this over the next 3 decades.

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is deep, racy and layered from the very first taste. A large-scaled, sumptuous wine, the 2009 impresses for its exceptional balance and pure pedigree. There is plenty of flesh here, but also more than enough tannin to help balance some of the wine's more overt tendencies. A dazzling, utterly vivid finish rounds things out in style. This large-scaled, voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignon should be at its finest between the ages of 10 and 30. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039."

98 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Dec 2012

"Shafer's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is all high notes. Sweet red plum and cherry notes meld into mint, spice and new leather, all supported by silky, polished tannins that add finesse to the plush fruit. Rich, opulent and beautifully textured throughout, the 2009 is going to provide fabulous, viscerally thrilling drinking pretty much right out of the gate. This is a great Hillside Select. Frankly, I can't imagine anyone who enjoys Hillside Select not wanting the 2009 in their cellar. The persistent, resonant finish is pure sensuality."
