'Tis the Season Part 1
 December 2013

Greetings!

There is not a more fun, entertaining, and quite frankly exhausting time of year than the weeks to come.  We're over-fed, over-scheduled, over-worked but still happy to bounce from party to party and dinner to dinner.

Like all good dramas, some stories are best told into two parts. So with that theme in mind, part one of my newsletter is here to help take some of the work off your plate with a selection of wines that you can proudly serve in your own home or bring to the many parties you are invited to.

Part two will arrive in your inbox in a couple of days and will contain a selection of some of this years finest, collectable wines.  These could be gifts for your best clients or to enjoy with your closest friends and family.

As always, our website is loaded with reviews and stories about all of our wines.  You can also find there our catalogues, blog and so much more.

All the best for a safe and happy holiday season.

Sincerely,
Chris.

BlueMtnBrut

Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars
Okanagan Valley Brut NV
$28.45 per bottle, cases of 12

The Mavety family has been growing outstanding grapes in Okanagan Falls for over 40 years and producing their own wines for almost 30.  Their captivating terroir of glacial tills and granite imparts a distinct minerality to all their wines regardless of varietal.  We feel they offer outrageous value.

The Brut is a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and produced using the "traditional method" of bottle fermentation.  At less than $30 per bottle, this is one of the "Champagne season's" best values.

"This is excellent value for a bottle-fermented sparkling wine. The wine has toasty and citrus notes with a crisp, dry finish."

BM_Chard

Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars
Okanagan Valley Chardonnay 2011
$24.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Balanced, harmonious, terroir driven estate-grown Chardonnay is a rare find at $25, but Blue Mountain's is just that.  A beautiful wine, elegant and honest.

"A fellow taster whispered "Meursault" upon tasting this next to me, and that's a magical word to chardonnay lovers. Yes, I'd have to agree, this white winks at fine white Burgundy, with subtle fruit supported by lots of vanilla and lively acidity. Try it with grilled salmon."

Le Haut Lieu

Domaine Huet
Vouvray Sec "Le Haut Lieu" 2011
$34.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Domaine Huet is well known among collectors for their extremely long-lived Chenin Blancs, sourced entirely from three small estate vineyards.  Currently at auction, one may still find Huets from the 1930's and 1940's in pristine condition. "Le Haut Lieu" Sec is their dry wine from the vineyard which produces the supplest most early-drinking Chenin Blancs.

If you're part of the ABC "Anything but Chardonnay" movement, you may like to consider this.  A full bodied white that's barrel fermented and aged for for an additional 6 months in barrel.  It presents a similar mouthfeel to Chardonnay, but with higher acidity and a more floral flavour spectrum.

"An attractive and floral nose here. This seems to be in a very classic, clean and expressive style, although it should be noted that this is still in the very primary stage, showing varietal, floral-pear fruit. The palate is very attractive, gentle, restrained, not overly exuberant and with what feels like a gentle acid backbone (although it has the higher acidity of the three sec cuvées). An attractive but easy-going style. "

Tiefenbrunner logo

Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio 2012
$18.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Tiefenbrunner's Pinot Grigio is our biggest seller and for good reason.  When grapes are grown in cool mountain regions, as Tiefenbrunner's are, the vineyards are subjected to more UV rays than those near sea level.  In an attempt to protect the seeds from UV damage, the plant reacts by producing really thick skins.  The skin is where all the components for flavour are found and so thicker skins means tastier wine.

This Pinot Grigio is medium bodied, and rather rich on the palate for a wine with such bright, crisp acidity.  It shows a "baking spiciness" to its pure green apple and pear flavours that combines with a minerality to create an all-around delicious wine.

As a party wine, it doesn't get any more crowd-pleasing than this lovely Pinot Grigio.

Cannonball Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
$22.95 per bottle, cases of 12

As far as bang-for-your-buck wines go, it's difficult to find better values than the wines of Cannonball Wine Company.
In addition to this full bodied and round Cabernet we offer three Sonoma County appellation wines, a rich fruity Merlot; a pretty, gentle Chardonnay; and a crisp, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc.

"Ripe, forward and generous with plum, black cherry and spice; rich with velvety texture and notes of chocolate and toasty oak; vibrant and long."

2012 Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc    $21.95 per bottle, cases of 12
2012 Sonoma County Chardonnay            $21.95 per bottle, cases of 12
2011 Sonoma County Merlot                      $22.95 per bottle, cases of 12

75 Wine Company
California Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
$30.95 per bottle, cases of 12

What makes this Cabernet stand out from the rest is the fruit sources.  Tuck Beckstoffer, the man behind 75 Wine Company, and son of famed grower Andy Beckstoffer, grows this wine in Napa and Lake Counties.

Lake County sits north of Napa, further from any influence of the Pacific Ocean and San Pablo Bay.  The Cabernet grown here is leaner and more herbal than the full-throttle Cab coming from Napa.  A 50/50 blend of both sources produces a harmonious wine that is very full bodied yet plush with firm but round, ripe tannins.  This drinks way above its $31 price point and the classy packaging looks like a collectable, "cult" wine to boot.

Conundrum Red 2011
$26.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Caymus owner Chuck Wagner remembers his father Charlie blending together wines at the dinner table - a little Cabernet, a little Zinfandel, perhaps a little Petit Verdot, to blend a harmonious wine for drinking that night.

With this memory as inspiration, the Wagners have released Conundrum Red, a sibling to their super-popular Conundrum White.  A blend of what we believe to be Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and red Muscat, the recipe is actually top-secret.

It is a very full bodied red, that finishes dry but leans toward Amarone in it's palate presentation.  The Cabernet and Petite Sirah provide the heft and tannins, the Zinfandel provides the juiciness and high-toned aromatics, the Muscat provides a haunting sweet note.  This is an exciting wine that is great with food (stewed or grilled meats), with a cheese plate (as a Port or Amarone substitute) or just by itself.

BernardMoreauChardonnay

Domaine Bernard Moreau
Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2011
$23.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Bernard Moreau's humble Bourgogne Pinot Noir is ripened in Les Cras, a vineyard located in the northernmost part of the Mâcon.  This vineyard is a "lieu dit", which means it is a vineyard of such important soil that the locals know it by name yet the government has yet to stamp it a Cru designation.

The thin soils here produce a juicy, fruit-driven Pinot Noir.  His barrel regime incorporates only 10% new, the rest are used for up to four vintages.  This modest ageing process highlights his fruit's nuances rather than hides them.

For estate grown, artisan Burgundy at a very reasonable price, look no further.

Paretaio

Falchini "Paretaio" IGT 2009
$27.95 per bottle, cases of 6

Although Riccardo Falchini passed away in 2010, today his sons Michael and Christopher carry on his legacy by producing the finest wines in Chianti Colli Senesi.

Falchini's consulting enologist is Giacomo Tachis, the man integral to the development of Tignanello, Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Solaia, and other great Italian wines.  Falchini is a member of the "Titolati" (the word means "The Selected"), an association of enlightened producers that reinforce the highest of standards that must be adhered to in the identified vineyards and the demanding norms of vinification that will result in the optimum achievement in the wine offered.

"Falchini's 2009 Paretaio (Sangiovese 95% and 5% Merlot) is rich, deep and powerful. Layers of black fruit, grilled herbs, tobacco, smoke and graphite emerge from a big, broad-shouldered frame as the wine opens up in the glass. Sweet floral notes appear later, adding an element of lift that complements the generally dark aromas and flavours. The 2009 can be enjoyed today with some air, but it is best cellared for another few years."

Mongrana

Querciabella "Mongrana" IGT 2009
$24.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Grown in the exciting Maremma region of coastal Tuscany, "Mongrana" delivers an energetic, vibrant Super-Tuscan meant for immediate consumption.  The biodynamic farming principals of Querciabella are employed here as well as at the estate in Greve.  The effort that this style of winegrowing demands shows in the quality of the wines.  In fact the 2010 vintage of Mongrana was named #80 in Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2013.

"Clear aromas of blueberry and light jam. Full bodied, with silky tannins and a citrus, plum and berry character. Rich yet balanced and very pretty. Drink now or hold."

91 points, JamesSuckling.com, Aug 2011

"The 2009 Mongrana shows off an attractive pliancy and radiance to its red fruit that makes it an excellent choice for near-term drinking. Sweet floral and spice notes add an attractive brightness to the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014."
