'Tis the Season Part 2
December 2013
|
Greetings!
Our second holiday newsletter focuses on the more premium priced wines, those that are collectable and make amazing gifts. However, they are not all for the cellar. During the holidays I like to crack open some of my best and share them with friends and family. I hope you do too.
Visit us on the web for so much more!
All the best for a happy and safe holiday season.
Sincerely,
Chris.

Champagne Gaston Chiquet
"Special Club" Brut 2005
$69.95 per bottle, cases of 6
"Nicolas Chiquet is among the greatest of all the grower-producers."
Rajat Parr, Secrets of the Sommeliers, 2010
"Chiquet's 2005 Brut Special Club is laced with dried pears, cherries, spices, mint and orange peel. This is a fairly soft, open Champagne. Like so many 2005s, it appears to be best suited for drinking over the next few years. Sweet floral and spiced notes are woven together nicely on the attractive, soft finish. The Special Club is 65% Chardonnay and 35% Pinot Noir. Disgorgement date: June 2012. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017."
90 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Nov 2012

Champagne Vilmart Grand Cellier 1er Cru NV Brut
$79.95 per bottle, cases of 6
"Vibrant acidity structures this seamlessly integrated version, backing the layered flavours. Shows lovely texture and length."
95 points, Wine Spectator, Dec 2013
That's a nice score, but I prefer Terry Thiese's descriptor on this wine, a barrel-fermented "luxury" style of Champange, "The new disgorgement is a delicate, almost serene edition of a wine that's often quite vivid, that really shows its facets of saffron, brioche and lobster stock. This is classier and more "fondue" than usual, with lingering vanilla and jasmine and even elderflower notes. It conveys a courteous repose."
Vilmart's Champagnes continue to be some of the most memorable and enjoyable wines, not only Champagnes, I have the pleasure to drink.

Maison Alex Gambal
$74.95 per bottle, cases of 6
Alex Gambal crafts, among others, definitive village-level wines. Wines that speak of their birthplace, do not chase critics' palates and drink beautifully from day one. We couldn't be happier to have Mr. Gambal's wines in our catalogue. "This has proven itself to be a consistently fine performer for its level and 2010 will not be an exception to this rule of excellence as there is lovely complexity to the acacia blossom, apple and pear suffused nose that is trimmed in background hints of wood toast. There is good richness to the refined and silky middle weight flavours that culminate in a tension-filled, balanced and lingering finish. A first-rate villages and worth your attention. Outstanding top value" 89 points, burghound.com, June 2012

Hanzell Vineyards "Sebella" Chardonnay Sonoma Valley 2012
$49.95 per bottle, cases of 12
Hanzell produces the longest lived Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in California. While these miniscule volumes age, "Sebella" provides a very approachable Hanzell Estate vineyard, terroir-centric Chardonnay. The fruit comes from younger vines, but the care with which the principal wines are made is on display here as well.
"This was aged in used French oak for several months, just enough to give it a soft edge of butter and honey. The basic fruit flavours are pure, ripe and delicious, with suggesting notes of tangerine and mango, brightened by a vibrant thread of lime juice."

Altesino
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2007
$109.95 per bottle, cases of 6
"Fine wine with fabulous aromas of tangerines and peaches with plums. So aromatic. Full body, with super polished tannins and a long, long finish. Drink or hold."
95 points, JamesSuckling.com, Feb 2013
"Pungent with balsamic and macchia (Mediterranean) underbrush aromas, this distinctive red also features cherry, leather and tobacco notes. The supple texture is offset by firm yet ripe and refined tannins. Excellent length. Best from 2016 through 2035. 850 cases made."
94 points, Wine Spectator, June 2013

Altesino
Brunello di Montalcino "Montosoli" 2008
$109.95 per bottle, cases of 6
"Intense balsamic and mint notes make this red distinctive, along with currant, raspberry and floral touches. Silky, ripe and impressive, this shows elegance and a vibrant structure. Offers excellent length and resonance on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2032. 1,250 cases made."
95 points, June 2013 and #96 Wine of the Year, Wine Spectator
"It's hard to think of a more beautiful vineyard in Tuscany than Montosoli, located a few miles to the north of the medieval town of Montalcino. Here is where the world's greatest Sangiovese is produced, time and time again. According to Claudio Basla, part-owner and manager of the estate, the brilliance of Altesino's Montosoli is the wine's "perfect balance between muscular power and elegance, due to the unique soil, microclimate, [exposure] to the sun and altitude of the vineyard." The French would call it great terroir."
Wine Spectator, Feb 21, 2001

Ridge Vineyards "Geyserville" 2011
$50.95 per bottle, cases of 6
Originally planted in 1886, Geyserville is sourced from the "Old Patch" of the Whitton Ranch and are the oldest vines that Ridge farms. They have made Geyserville from these vines every year since 1966. It continues to be one of California's reference Zinfandels and most famous "field blends". What is so great about this wine is that you can drink your Geyservilles young or any time along its 15+ year evolution.
"78% Zinfandel; 16% Carignane; 4% Petite Sirah; and 2% Other. Another stunner under the Geyserville moniker, this rich, nicely layered offering combines red and black berries with touches of dried leaves and black pepper in its mid-volume aromas. And, as promising as the nose seems to be, the wine is even more deeply packed on the palate where its blackberry, raspberry, darkly spiced fruit is joined by background notes of creamy oak. Latter palate tannin assures that this version of Geyserville will enjoy the long-aging abilities of its predecessors." 95 points and 3 stars (highest award level), Connoisseur's Guide to California Wines, May 2013

Peay Vineyards "Sonoma Coast" Pinot Noir 2011
$62.95 per bottle, cases of 6
The Fort Ross/Seaview AVA of Sonoma County produces some of California's best wines, proven over the years by wineries such as Peay, Marcassin and Hirsch. The location far off the beaten path and above the fog line calls for diligent viticulture, but the results are worth it. The Sonoma Coast bottling is Peay's entry-point Pinot Noir.
I also have the 2011 Pomarium Pinot Noir available at $78 per bottle and the 2011 Estate Chardonnay at $77, all wines come in cases of 6. "Bright ruby-red. Highly perfumed smoke- and spice-accented aromas of candied red berries, vanilla and rose. Nicely concentrated but energetic, offering sappy raspberry and cherry-vanilla flavors that gain spiciness with air. Closes vibrant and long, with a lingering floral note and silky, fully integrated tannins."
91 points, International Wine Cellar, May 2013
"..to taste the indisputably original savour of Pinot Noirs from producers such as Flowers, Hirsch and Peay is to marvel at America's Pinot Noir treasures."

Fontodi "Flaccianello della Pieve" IGT 2009
$104.95 per bottle, cases of 6
This is the thoroughbred Tuscan red. In my opinion, the definition of Sangiovese. Three times in six years it was named in Wine Spectator's Top 10 - 2010, 2009 and 2004. No other wine can make this claim. Last year, this 2009 was named #25.
It is the only wine I collect a vertical of and I plan to drink ten at once (probably with friends).
"The first impression of this red is purity and finesse, as black currant, raspberry and violet aromas and flavours stay focused and persistent. An earthy leather element and mineral notes chime in on the finish, backed by a vibrant structure. Sangiovese. Best from 2015 through 2032. 5,000 cases made."
96 points and #25 Wine of the Year 2012, Oct 2012, Wine Spectator

Shafer Vineyard "Relentless"2010
$104.95 per bottle, cases of 12
Last year's Wine Spectator "Wine of the Year", is back with a vengeance. It's a little primary right now in my opinion, but year after year this is one of Napa's most distinctive wines. Forget any prejudices you may have about Syrah and just consider this "Napa Red". You'll be happy that you did.
"The extraordinary 2010 Relentless (96% Syrah and 4% Petite Sirah) offers up notes of graphite, subtle wood charcoal, barbecue smoke, blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit, and hints of spice and meat. This full-bodied, supple-textured, exceptionally rich Syrah already has a certain accessibility, but should age well for two decades."

Altamura Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
$117.95 per bottle, cases of 12
arriving Dec 6th
Every vintage, regardless of the growing season, this wine receives 94 points (or better) from the critics. It's simply amazing.
2010 was a difficult vintage, with spring storms and rain throughout the summer, but in the end great wines were made. Maybe it's Frank Altamura's diverse Wooden Valley soils? Although many wineries grow grapes here, Altamura is the only winery.
Perhaps the others should call a realtor.
"Offers a racy aroma, but tames quickly, with a dill-tinged edge to the tiers of dark berry, mocha, raspberry and subtle earth, gaining depth and maintaining persistence on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2027."
94 points, Wine Spectator, Sept 2013

Chateau Montelena "The Montelena Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
$124.95 per bottle, cases of 6
Calistoga's grandest estate has turned out a surprisingly ready-to-drink Cabernet. "The Estate" as its collectors call it tends to be a reduced wine in its youth, demanding a decade of ageing before recommended drinking, but this vintage makes me rethink that rule of thumb.
I've had the pleasure to drink many vintages of this wine and I think that at $125 per bottle, it is a tremendous value.
"Montelena's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate wraps around the palate with serious depth. Even with all of its intensity, the 2009 has a silkiness that makes it incredibly delicious at this early stage. Red berries, flowers, tobacco and sweet herbs all flesh out on the generous, radiant finish. While many 2009s are a bit tight today, Montelena's 2009 Estate is showing very nicely, although it is keeping some cards close to the vest. I imagine the 2009 will start to enter its prime drinking window around age 8-10 and drink well for at least another decade beyond that. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029."
93+ points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Dec 2012

Cain "Five" 2008
$124.95 per bottle, cases of six
Carved into the top of Spring Mountain, Sonoma to the west, Napa to the east and the rolling fog of San Pablo Bay to the south are the rugged vineyards of one of Napa's original "cult" wineries, Cain Vineyard & Winery.
The world up here is different. In the summer, high above the fog line Cain enjoys warmer, longer days than does the valley floor. In the winter it snows up here every year, in the valley snow is a rarity. During harvest, which is all done by hand over six weeks, the last fruit to come in is the super-aromatic Cabernet Franc. In the valley almost always the Franc comes in before the Sauvignon. The vineyards are surrounded by oak, madrone, bay laurel, and Douglas-fir trees which contribute to the unique aromatic signature of the Cain Five.
The wines are handled gently and matured in several degrees of new and used barriques. It is structured, elegant, powerful. Simply put, Cain Five is a wine with no comparison. A deeply flavoured, tremendously age-worthy wine that speaks of its roots high atop Spring Mountain.

Continuum 2010
$225.95 per bottle, cases of six bottles
Tim Mondavi's project on Pritchard Hill is simply one of Napa's top collectable wines right now and keeps getting better year over year.
"This has been an impressive, serious wine since the debut vintage, and Tim Mondavi's estate high on Pritchard Hill has fashioned a 2010 blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 11% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot. Gorgeously ripe, intricate and nuanced, with aromas of spring flowers and red and black fruits, a stunning texture, sweet tannin, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and undeniable elegance and finesse, this complex beauty cascades over the palate without a hard edge to be found. It is a tribute to Mondavi's long resume of skillful winemaking. Black currants, blueberries and a touch of raspberries are all compelling and persistent. Drink this gorgeous Napa red now and over the next 15+ years."
