July 2013
|
|
Greetings!
I hope you're enjoying this crazy summer we're having!
I am quite certain that at some point we will have extended periods of sun, so the barbecues will be firing and your patios will be full. With that in mind I have a selection of wines that any collector would be proud to pour, wines that are drinking beautifully and are almost sold out. Here is your last chance, get them while you can!
Please visit us on the web for our blog, new catalogues and all our reviews and new wines. Have a great summer.
Sincerely,
Chris.

Hanzell Vineyards
"Sebella" Sonoma Valley Chardonnay 2011
$49.95 per bottle, 12 bottles per case
Hanzell's Sonoma Valley vineyard is a California treasure. Not only does it produce some of the longest-lived and most sought after Chardonnays in the U.S., the original planting, the Ambassador's 1953 Vineyard, continues to produce to this day and is now the oldest continuously producing Chardonnay vineyard in North America.
The goal when Ambassador Zellerbach started the winery was to produce a Californian wine as good as the best France could offer. So in 1948 he bought a piece of land overlooking the town of Sonoma, developed vineyards (they like to say that they used more pickaxes than shovels), built a winery building honouring the Clos de Vougeot and proceeded to change the wine industry.
They were the first California winery to use exclusively French oak barriques to age their wines, the first to use temperature controlled stainless steel fermentors, the first winery to use inert gas when bottling to prevent oxidation, and the first winery to isolate and control the use of malolactic bacteria. These are now standard practice in wineries the world over.
Due to the reductive style and incredible ageability of the estate wines, "Sebella" is sourced from the younger vines which are "auditioning" for the estate bottling. It offers the Hanzell terroir with accessibility and verve.
If you enjoy Puligny-, Chassagne- or Batard-Montrachets this wine is for you. It shows almost a powdery minerality, beautiful gentle Chardonnay fruit flavours and a rich yet gentle mouthfeel. I would also recommend decanting this wine to let the bouquet develop. Drink it now and for the next five years.

Champagne Vilmart Cuvée "Rubis" Non-Vintage $78.95 per bottle, 6 bottles per case less than 2 cases available!
Vilmart is regarded as one of Champagne's greatest producers and the highest echelon of the Grower-Producer houses. Their non-vintage Cuvée Rubis is rarely available and I have only 11 bottles remaining. Enjoy it now and for the following 3-4 years.
"The NV Brut Premier Cru Cuvée Rubis flows from the glass with sensual layers of perfumed fruit, showing stunning detail, clarity and purity. This vivid, multi-dimensional Champagne is full of nuance, not to mention class. It is simply wonderful and is not to be missed. The Brut Premier Cru Cuvée Rubis is 90% Pinot Noir (including 15% still Pinot) and 10% Chardonnay (equal parts 2006 and 2005 vintages), aged in medium-sized barrels. Disgorged: December, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016."

Chateau Anthonic Cru Bourgeois Moulis-en-Medoc 2009
$32.95 per bottle, 12 bottles per case
Two-thousand and nine is an outstanding vintage in Bordeaux (in case you haven't heard), and Chateau Anthonic produces a supple, well balanced, dry, cedary, very drinkable Merlot-dominant wine. It goes to show that you don't have to spend fifty or more dollars to enjoy terrific wine from this historic vintage. This wine will age nicely for over 5 years.
"Fleshy and supple, with a generous feel to the plum, blackberry and black cherry fruit layers, all framed with integrated toast and a subtle tarry thread. Drink now through 2016. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 20,000 cases made."

Ralph Fowler Mt. Benson Shiraz 2010
$26.95 per bottle, 12 bottles per case
On the cold, wind-swept vineyards in Mt. Benson the Fowler family makes intense, almost wildly flavoured Shiraz, Viognier and Merlot.
Mt. Benson isn't as widely known as Barossa and McLaren Vale, but it is located near Padthaway and Coonawarra in what's called "The Limestone Coast", on the southern Great Australian Bight. The miserly soils, blustery winds and permanent sunshine provide the ideal growing conditions for full flavoured, robust, savoury wines with intensity and acidity.
Back in November 2012 we were asked to participate in an event with Riedel to showcase their highest-end glassware. Their choice for the Syrah glass was this Fowler Shiraz due to its classic Shiraz character, mouthfeel and notable aromatics. It was quite the sensory experience!

Astrolabe "Province" Marlborough Pinot Noir 2010
Astrolabe's Sauvignon Blanc is a phemonenon, but the winery is no "one trick pony". This Pinot Noir is outstanding. A blend of fruit from multiple vineyards within the Marlborough appellation, the "Province" Pinot Noir celebrates what Marlborough Pinot should be. A wine with fruity intensity, supple tannin and gulp-ability.
"Features intoxicating aromatics of orange zest, dried lavender and fresh, peppery earth notes, with a succulent, juicy core of raspberry and strawberry. Supple in texture, with the flavours lingering on the fresh, juicy finish. Drink now through 2022."

Domaine Brusset
"Les Hauts de Montmirail" 2011
$49.95 per bottle, 6 bottles per case less than 10 cases remain
This is a great vintage in the southern Rhone Valley - a warm, dry spring provided an early start to the growing season, the summer was cool and wet, but that's fine because a long, dry and warm summer provided a harvest season that was simply perfect.
The 'Les Hauts De Montmirail' is the winery's pinnacle of production and contends with most Chateauneuf-du-Papes in quality at two-thirds the price of wines from that more fashionable appellation. Because it's Grenache, this drinks well young (lots of fruit and low tannin) and for the following decade with ease.
The 2011 is not yet reviewed, but previous four vintages reviewed by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 2010, 2009, 2007 and 2006 received 93, 93, 94 and 92 points respectively. We receive only 15 six-packs each year and I have less than 10 remaining.

Buehler Vineyards
"Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
$49.95 per bottle, 12 bottles per case
For almost thirty years, the flagship portion of our portfolio has been wines from California, and over the years we have introduced a number of small-production, super high-quality Cabernets to the market with great success. We feel that Buehler Vineyards offers outrageous value at the premium level of Cabernet production.
All of the fruit for this wine comes from their estate which is located between the Howell Mountain AVA and the Pritchard Hill area of St. Helena. Basically you're getting the quality of wine you would expect from these super-premium regions at valley floor prices.
My personal review, and I stand by this, is 95 points. Poured beside wines of the same price point the Buehler stands head and shoulders above others. It's not even close. Compared to "collectable" Cabernets with three-digit price tags and "Classic" scores, this wine is a worthy comparison. It exudes polish, depth, refinement and ageability. Drink now and for 15 or more years.

Chateau Montelena "The Montelena Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
$124.95 per bottle, 6 bottles per case
less than 3 cases available!
Few wines have the pedigree and reputation for quality as the Montelena Estate. Throughout the years it has gained a reputation as a wine that demands cellaring but can live on for decades. The 2009 provides a refreshing version, more forward and accessible than other vintages, this can be drank now with a good decanting and for decades to come.
"Montelena's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate wraps around the palate with serious depth. Even with all of its intensity, the 2009 has a silkiness that makes it incredibly delicious at this early stage. Red berries, flowers, tobacco and sweet herbs all flesh out on the generous, radiant finish. While many 2009s are a bit tight today, Montelena's 2009 Estate is showing very nicely, although it is keeping some cards close to the vest. I imagine the 2009 will start to enter its prime drinking window around age 8-10 and drink well for at least another decade beyond that. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029."

Dominus Estate "Napanook" 2009
$69.95 per bottle, 12 bottles per case
The 2009 Dominus Estate wines are must-haves for any wine cellar. We feel that the 2009 Napanook is drinking as well now as young Dominus used to in the early 1990's. The 2009 Dominus (below) is super-collectable already. We recommend you let the Dominus age for 20 to 30 years and drink the Napanook along the way.
Historically the Napanook vineyard is extremely important - it is the site of the first vines in Napa Valley, planted by George Yount, for whom the town of Yountville is named.
"The 2009 Napanook is rich, powerful and seductive. This is a more radiant, brighter style than the 2008. There is considerable fleshiness as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2009 is a very sexy Napanook endowed with tons of personality and sheer class. Despite its generous fruit, there is more than enough underlying structure to allow the wine to drink well for a number of years. In 2009 the blend is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019."

Dominus Estate "Dominus" 2009 MAGNUMS
$345.95 per magnum, 3 magnums per case
Magnums? MAGNUMS?! In cases of three!!
"Stunning nose of lavender and flowers. Currants and raspberries. Subtle and intriguing. Full and dense but wonderfully balanced with firm and silky tannins and a persistent finish. Dusty texture. A wine so balanced that you want to drink it already. Better in 2017." 98 points, JamesSuckling.com, Oct 2012
"The 2009 Dominus flows from the glass with layers of highly expressive fruit. The wine possesses stunning richness, power and depth. Dark red fruit, tobacco, flowers and spices are woven into a seamless, beautifully articulated finish. Elegance and intensity are in perfect harmony here. This is a thrilling wine from Dominus. The blend is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029."
