Burgundian Beauties
April 2013
|
|
Greetings!
Heading into spring our preference for wine styles changes. From the rich dark wines we like with braised foods in the winter, our outlook to sunnier days lends itself to lighter food and softer wines. For the beautiful days ahead here is a selection of some of our Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from their homeland of France to the current hot-spot California and often under-appreciated British Columbia.
In addition to those included here, we also have a tiny allocation of some high-calibre village-level 2011 red Burgundies from Domaine Alex Gambal available for pre-order. All will be packed in cases of six bottles. Prices here are best-estimates. They include:
Vosne-Romanée 2011 $83 - the reference point terroir for all Pinot Noir
Chambolle-Musigny 2011 $89 - the most delicate, feminine and graceful of all red Burgundies
Gevrey-Chambertin 2011 $89 - the most rich, potent and powerful of all red Burgundies
If you're interested in securing any, please contact me for further information.
Please visit us on the web for all the reviews, blogs and catalogues. And if you have friends or colleagues who also enjoy wine, please forward this newsletter along.
All my best,
Chris.

Maison Alex Gambal Bourgogne Chardonnay 2010
$34.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
The sources of Alex Gambal's fruit for his entry-level Chardonnay is anything but entry-level. Volnay, Meursault, Le Haute Cote de Beaune and Savigny Les Beaune vineyards provide the grapes and Alex's hands-off, traditional approach to winemaking (indigineous yeasts, hand harvesting, gravity-flow production, and deft blending practices) retains all the character and terroir of these famed villages.
The clay and limestone vineyards produce fruit with elegant acidity and soft, green and yellow fruit flavours. The finesse that these soils bring to the mouthfeel really shines through. Only 15% new oak is used in the ageing process.

Maison Alex Gambal
Puligny-Montrachet 2010
$72.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
Wines produced in the communes surrounding the most famous Chardonnay vineyard in the world display a lemon-lime fruitiness and sharp minerality that is at once distant and haunting. Such gentle fruitiness coupled with a powdery minerally sensation is the reason Burgundies are so captivating.
The fruit for this elegant wine was purchased in the lieu dit Clos du Vieux Chateau in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet. Only 20% new French oak was used for the elevage.

Maison Alex Gambal
Chassagne-Montrachet 2009
$72.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
"This is creamy, providing a textural backdrop for the nutmeg, vanilla, clove and apple flavours. Well-balanced with a lingering finish of spice and buttered pastry. Best from 2013. 225 cases made" 90 points, Wine Spectator, July 2012
"Initially soft, this wine's mineral character only comes through slowly. The wine has richness and weight. Very textured, it could age well for 3-4 years."
90 points, Wine Enthusiast, Sept 2011

Domaine Luquet Pouilly-Fuissé 2010
$31.45 per 750ml bottle, twelve bottles per case
$18.95 per 375ml bottle, twelve bottles per case
This Chardonnay is planted on the chalky-clay soils of the Côte Mâconnais that are very rich in limestone. Almost all the parcels are located in the village of Fuissé. On average these vineyards are approximately 50 years old. Harvesting is done by hand in the traditional way. The wine is vinified in stainless steel tanks to preserve the natural fruit flavours and the characteristic of each vintage. This Pouilly-Fuissé is a generous and rich wine, with an emerald-gold colour. The Mâconnais soil favours elegant development of fragrance, with a hint of hazelnuts, toasted almonds and exotic fruit. This wine can be kept for 6 years.
In Sotheby's World Wine Encyclopedia, Tom Stevenson claims the Mâconnais provides... "easily the best-value pure chardonnay wine in the world. The climate and ambience of the region differ from the Côte d'Or, the vineyards benefit from more sun, less rain, and little risk of frost."

Lis Neris "Jurosa" Chardonnay 2010
$38.95 per bottle, twelve bottles per case
Last year we introduced Lis Neris to Ontario and the launch was a smashing success. Friulian wines are the most revered whites of Italy, due to the proximity to the Adriatic, calcareous gravels dragged there by glacial meltwaters and the mistral-like winds that promote acid development, thick skins and vibrant fruit flavours.
This 2010 has yet to be reviewed, but to give you an idea of the style to expect, the 2009 received the following critique: "The 2009 Chardonnay Jurosa is fabulous in this vintage. It shows all of the elements that make the best Friulian wines so compelling; expressive varietal fruit, vibrant minerality and the personality of the vintage. The wine literally bristles on the palate with energy focus and vitality. A poised, centered finish gives the wine its sense of proportion and balance. The 2009 Jurosa is quite simply one of the very finest wines I have ever tasted from Lis Neris, and I have been visiting here for over a decade. Proprietor Alvaro Pecorari notes that this was the last fruit to be harvested in 2009 yet had the highest acidity. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. "

Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2010
$64.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
Grown on the far Sonoma Coast near Cazadero, Flowers Vineyard & Winery has established itself as one of California's top Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producers.
Flowers was selected as one of Wine Spectator's "Top 30 California Chardonnay Producers" in July 2012, as well Wine & Spirits magazine has named Flowers Vineyard & Winery as a Winery of the Year Twelve times - 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005 through 2013.
"Light straw colour in the glass. Very nice aromatic expression showing scents of white peach, lemon curd, and bear claw pastry. Fresh tasting flavours of green apple and brioche with a lemon peel driven and lively finish. Seamless and a solid food wine."
Good "Plus", theprinceofpinot.com, June 2012
"Pale gold colour. Enticing, airy aromas of lemon zest and lime blossom are brought back to earth with those of bayleaf and wet flint. Fresh flavours of Asian pear and Honeycrisp apple are supported by abundant texture in the mid-palate. With vibrant acidity, typical of the extreme Sonoma Coast, this Chardonnay finishes with length and elegance."

Hanzell "Sebella" Sonoma Valley Chardonnay 2011
$49.95 per bottle, twelve bottles per case
Hanzell is one of California's historically important wineries, famed for its incredibly long lived Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. However, from the vines auditioning for the Estate wines, they produce "Sebella", named for Sebastian and Ella, children of proprietors Alexandre and Jennifer DeBrye. This wine shows an initial light floral and citrus aroma, complemented by pear and apple skin, all framed by the classic Hanzell minerality.
With time in the glass, the floral component comes forward with the beautiful scent of honeysuckle. There is nice weight and fullness on the entry, with flavours of green apple, tangerine and white peach. The initial richness gives way to a focused acidity that bursts through to a long lemony finish. |

Buehler Vineyards Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2011
$27.95 per bottle, twelve bottles per case
The Russian River Valley, so named for the immigrant fur-trappers that settled this land, is the confluence of the Russian River and the Pacific Ocean. At night the river pulls fog off the Pacific and through Petaluma Gap, bathing the vineyards and dropping the temperature by 30-40 degrees fahrenheit, increasing acids in the grapes, making them vibrant on the palate.
This daily fluctuation, combined with the enviable Goldridge Loam soils combine to provide the a perfect environment for Chardonnays with gentle pear, green apple and "Peaches and Cream" corn flavours.
"The 2011 Russian River Chardonnay displays abundant floral/stone fruit aromas lightly accented by toasty, graham cracker sur-lie qualities. The mouthfeel is creamy and full but the natural acidity of the Russian River fruit carries this velvet textured package to a long, clean finish."

Blue Mountain Okanagan Valley Chardonnay 2011
$24.95 per bottle, twelve bottles per case
Blue Mountain Vineyards was established in 1971 by the Mavety family, the vineyards overlooking Vaseaux Lake in the southern Okanagan Valley. They supplied high-quality grapes to wineries for 20 years, and in 1991 started to produce wine themselves. Blue Mountain Vineyards and Cellars has become one of B.C.'s iconic wineries in the past 20 years.
The soils, deposited over millenia by glacial and alluvial processes provides a mosaic of earth from which to produce their terroir-driven wines.
"The 2011 Chardonnay displays complex flavours of citrus and toast with a fresh yet rich lemony character, and anise notes on the finish. The structure of the wine will allow it to age beautifully for 4-6 years."

Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2011
$67.95 per bottle, six bottles per case arriving early June 2013
Director of Winemaking, Jason Jardine earned his stripes in winegrowing and development with notable Oregon producers including Domaine Serene and Tony Soter. His first winemaking tutelage was at the age of 21 with Robert Mondavi Woodbridge where he worked hand in hand with the Director of Winemaking David Akiyoshi. Prior to joining Flowers in May 2010, he was General Manager/Winemaker for Rhys Vineyards and Alesia Wines in the Santa Cruz Mountains, having launched the brand in 2003.
"Deep ruby red colour. Aromas of wild berries, savoury dried herbs, and subtle earthiness lift elegantly from the glass. On the palate, flavours of Bing cherry, rhubarb, and pomegranate are framed by fine-grained tannins, earthy minerality, and bright acidity. This wine has an enduring fresh finish."

Peay Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2010
$62.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
"Exceptional wines of rare precision and intensity." - Eric Asimov, The New York Times
Peay's 'entry level' Pinot Noir is an excellent example of the winery style - at once fruity and fresh as well as elegant and finessed. Prior to starting this label with her husband and her brother in law, Nick and Andy Peay, Vanessa Wong honed her craft at Peter Michael Winery making some of Sonoma's most famous wines.
"Light, bright red. Expressive, seductively perfumed nose evokes wild red fruits, potpourri and Asian spices, with a subtle smoky note in the background. Sweet, palate-caressing strawberry and raspberry flavours show impressive intensity and a weightless quality. The red berry and floral notes carry through on the bright, racy finish. "

Peay "Pomarium" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2010
$77.95 per bottle, six bottles per case
In December 2009 The San Francisco Chronicle named Peay Vineyards "2009 U.S. Winery of the Year".
As well, Wine & Spirits magazine has named Peay Vineyards as a "Artisan Winery of the Year" six times - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013
To quote Matt Kramer's Wine Spectator article "Seven Wines to Try Before, well, You Know" (Nov 30, 2009) "..taste the indisputably original savour of Pinot Noirs from producers such as Flowers, Hirsch and Peay is to marvel at America's Pinot Noir treasures."
"Medium red. Alluring aromas of red fruit preserves, incense and candied rose, with smoke and mineral overtones. Juicy, sharply focused raspberry and bitter cherry flavours show impressive depth and energy, with a slow-mounting florality. Refuses to let up on the finish, which strongly repeats the raspberry and rose notes."
93 points, International Wine Cellar, May/June 2012
"Named for the apple orchard the Peays planted to vines, this pinot is among the best vintages we've tasted from this ridge in Annapolis. The crop was short due to a cool, wet spring that impeded flowering; the harvest was relatively late, due to a generally cool fall. The wine leads with delicate raspberry scents, carried on lovely coastal freshness. That freshness lasts while the primary aspects of the fruit relent with air, yielding hints of flowers, the perfume of red apple skins adding to the mineral tinged tannins. Tightly structured, this is set to age for six years or more."

Lafond Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2010
$31.95 per bottle, twelve bottles per case
Many of you will be already familiar with the style of the Lafond wines since they share many of the same vineyards, barrels and winemaker with the Santa Barbara Winery.
The Santa Barbara and Lafond whites are produced in the Santa Barbara Winery while the reds for both properties are produced at the Lafond Winery just outside of Buelton (anyone remember Sideways?...).
From the early 1960s when the Santa Barbara Winery was established, Canadian born owner Pierre Lafond's goal was to open a second winery that bore his name and reflected more specifically the rich and varied terroir of the Santa Rita Hills appellation (SRH). At the end of the 1990's he was able to realize his dream with the release of the first wines under the Lafond Winery name. Lafond wines are made in small parcels - single vineyards lots of 350 cases and slightly larger quantities of approximately 1,000 cases from fruit harvested exclusively from vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills, designated SRH.
This is a very large scale, intense style of Pinot Noir. If you enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon but not the agressive tannins that come with young Cab, this may be the Pinot for you.

Blue Mountain Okanagan Valley Pinot Noir 2011
$29.95 per bottle, twelve bottles per case
"..there were not a lot of wineries in the Okanagan and Blue Mountain, when it opened twenty years ago, was one of the five best wineries - if not the best. Since then, there has been a tenfold increase in winery numbers. Blue Mountain is still one of the best but it has a lot more competition."
John Schreiner, johnschreiner.blogspot.ca
"Light garnet colour with red and black fruit. Vanilla and toast complement cassis and cherry flavours and spicy velvety tannins fill out the 2011 Pinot Noir. Its balanced structure will allow the wine to age 6 to 7 years."
