Greetings!
This week we share how Librarian Nancy McClary provided an opportunity for her sixth grade Independent Study students to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As part of the process they learned more about social media (specifically, Instagram) and using it in a responsible way.
Mrs. McClary writes:
"After talking about what Instagram is (a kind of social media where people can express themselves through pictures), we talked about Dr. King and what he did as a person.
"I then presented the bulletin board project and asked them to imagine the kinds of pictures Dr. King would have taken if he had a smartphone. What would he want to record and then share with the world? We talked about the Instagram name and how people use that as another way to express themselves.
"We then brainstormed words that would reflect either who MLK Jr. was or words that describe the type of person he was. These words would help them think of their Instagram name and also give them ideas to come up with pictures and then a comment.
"I asked that the comment graphic they created should explain the significance of the photo they chose. I had the students cut the pictures out and attached them to the iPad images. They seemed to enjoy the process and also finding a photo that was significant."
Here are just a few of their works - see more on the bulletin board outside the Technology Lab.
This week's top story on Facebook: We shared school nurse Jennifer Shingles' accomplishment of running a 5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon - one run each on four consecutive days - at Disney World last weekend. What an inspiration she is - congratulations!
