Greetings,

As you may know, "Creating Global Citizens" is our program theme for the year.

And it's not just a catchy phrase or a colorful logo - we take very seriously the charge to work with our students to create tomorrow's leaders, who will work with, live next door to, and be in relationships with people from all over the world and many different backgrounds.

One way we do that is by modeling global citizenship, and here are three stories that exemplify working for global change:

Visiting Artist Virginia Abbott

Local environmental artist Virginia Abbott (left) recently spent a week with us as our visiting artist. During the week, she worked with students in our K-8 visual arts classes, showing students how she works with found and recycled objects - and giving them an opportunity to do the same.

She invited students to bring in items to share, and throughout the week she crafted them into a one-of-a-kind piece, especially for Swain. It is now hanging in our Community Room gallery, along with several other of her works
(art teacher Adrian Sauers hangs the show, right). We invite you to stop by when you have a few minutes to examine the detail of her thought- ful work.

Ms. Abbott writes:

"When people see my work, I hope they enjoy or are moved by the subject matter. But just as important is that they begin to discover how surprisingly intricate and beautiful yet sturdy, sculpture made from recycled materials can be. I create cast paper sculpture entirely from post consumer pulp, which is pressed into molds from my original designs.  It is my small way helping the earth stay green."

Here are additional photos from her week at Swain, which was made possible by a grant from the Borgenicht Foundation.

Poet in residence Marilyn Hazelton

Marilyn Hazelton has been on Swain's faculty for more than 20 years, working with Swain's teachers and students as our poet in residence.

Mrs. Hazelton and her husband Dan were among the 400,000 citizens who took to the streets of New York City late last month, for the "People's Climate March".

As she wrote in an Op-Ed piece for the Morning Call:

"Increasingly, I have felt overwhelmed by news of droughts, tornadoes, tsunamis and hurricanes. Livelihoods and lives lost. Although the Lehigh Valley has not been severely affected... I began to feel afraid for the future of the world and for my sons and their families.

"... (A) bus (was organized) for the People's Climate March on Sept. 21 in New York City... I reserved two seats (for my husband and myself)... Would two additional people make any difference?

"(When we got there), sidewalks were lined with people applauding. With families, union members, artists, musicians, nuns, clergywomen and clergymen, we found ourselves in the middle of social change... In front, in back and on either side of me, I felt the personal and political will needed for significant change...

"My own plan is to continue making donations to select organizations while looking for ways to become more environmentally effective. I will vote for legislators who understand the urgency and need for change and integrate my new optimism into classes I facilitate. On the evening of the People's Climate March, back at last in Allentown, a college student on our bus thanked Dan and me for taking part. I have great hope for our future."

And our top story on Facebook this week:

Art teacher Trisha Samuel

Swain's art teacher Trisha Samuel doesn't just paint dramatic pictures of African elephants and black rhinos - she is working to save the real ones from extinction.

She and her family participated in a global march last Saturday; they were in Washington, D.C. as others marched in 130 cities worldwide.

Ms. Samuel is pictured with one of her pieces (above), and in this group photo, she's in the front (middle) wearing a bright yellow wrap to carry her daughter Adaline. Kudos to Ms. Samuel for living our Swain mission: '...to act responsibly in a changing world'.

Thanks for reading these stories about how
'global citizenship' comes to life at Swain!
