Greetings,

We are excited to share some of the many Swain stories from the previous week.

Hitting the road...

Fall is a perfect time to get out of the classroom and learn more about the bigger world and how things are made. Our Kindergarten students did just that when they traveled to Bauman's Apple Butter Factory in Sassamansville.

They learned that back in 1892, John Bauman purchased a cider press, and was soon making apple butter (a fruit product that keeps its goodness without preservatives or refrigeration) for all of his neighbors. The family-owned business is now operated by the third generation of Baumans.

After the tour, everyone enjoyed some outside time with good books! Enjoy these photos in Mrs. Beers' and  Mrs. Stout's galleries of additional images.

Teaching abstract math concepts

Have you ever wondered how we teach
abstract concepts of math to our youngest students?

Mrs. Akers and Ms. Sesh
(pictured, left) used the visual of a graph to teach their Prekindergarten students the idea of 'greater than' and 'less than' while also teaching about farm animals. Read all about it here, and to see more photos from their class.

What are those things on our campus?

You may have seen these odd-looking contraptions on our campus, and wondered what they are - they are the 'baskets' for the game of disc golf, also known as frisbee golf. This is a flying disc game, as well as a precision and accuracy sport, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target.

Mrs. Henning's fifth graders have been enjoying learning this exciting game - check out the photos by clicking this image.

Fall sports in full swing

Our fall sports season is underway, with four options for our 5th-8th grade athletes: field hockey, soccer, archery and cross country.

The field hockey and soccer teams have had several games, and on Monday our cross country team hosted a meet against Wyndcroft
(click on this photo to see the gallery).

Our archers are hosting their own tournaments, on Thursdays, Oct. 9 and 16, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in The McCann Center. Everyone is welcome to come out and watch them in action.

And this week on Facebook - our top story of the week:

Mr. Hirsh, our middle school humanities teacher and Outdoor Education coordinator, offered an opportunity to 6th- and 7th grade students to enjoy a fall kayaking trip.

Along with Mrs. Rodriguez, the 12 students left Swain after lunch on Friday, and traveled to the Sassafras River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. Amid a few rain showers, the campers enjoyed hiking, kayaking and canoeing, exploring beaches and marshes, and of course a campfire with s'mores before returning this afternoon.

Some of the adventurers' favorite moments included a trip to Lillypad Island and playing on the mini beach, building campfires and making s'mores, and walking to the overview to watch the sunset.

Thanks for enjoying our stories of our small classes, big opportunities and amazing results!
