June 15, 2014
Greetings -
On this beautiful Sunday we are thinking of all the fathers who have helped make Swain what it is today, and wishing them a Happy Father's Day!
It is also time to wrap up another school year, and 2013-2014 is certainly one for the books. We had so many wonderful learning adventures, activities, events, and 'small moments' - pour yourself a beverage and enjoy them all over again, on our Swain photo gallery, "SmugMug" (you will find the link to "Photos" on the top right corner of every page on www.swain.org).
Closing Ceremonies
The school year officially came to a close on Friday, when we celebrated with our two Closing Ceremonies.
First we welcomed the Preschool - 2nd grade students and their teachers. Each class performed for us, and then each teacher introduced her students as they walked across the stage. Head of School Todd Stansbery and Kyle Armstrong, Associate Head for Academics, congratulated each one individually, and then they had officially 'risen' to the next grade. (Click on the photo more images.)
During the second ceremony, the students in grades 3-7 completed their school year with performances (right - the 6th graders sing and dance), words of encouragement from Mr. Armstrong, and introductions by their teachers and advisors. Then it was off for a handshake with Mr. Stansbery and Mr. Armstrong, and the Classes of 2015 - 2019 were officially promoted. (Click on the photo more images.)
At the end of each ceremony, Mr. Stansbery took a moment to acknowledge the seven-year commit-ment of Mr. Armstrong, who - with his family - will be moving on to Gill-St. Bernard School. Mr. Stansbery presented Mr. Armstrong with a plaque that we hope will hang in his new office, to help him remember all those at Swain who he touched so deeply!
Final Faculty/Staff Meeting
After all the students and their families had headed home for their summer vacation, the faculty and staff met for a casual lunch and their final gathering of the year.
At this time it is traditional to acknowledge those Swain employees who have served for 10, 15, or more years. Then the faculty and staff who are retiring or leaving were also sent off with a friendly presentation from their colleagues.
Those retiring are:
- Stanley Moyer, band director and instructor (pictured, above, enjoying the speech given
about him by Caitlin Worrich) - Barbara Ward, art teacher
- Judy Skinner, Advancement office
- Betty Russell, cleaning staff
- Don Kemmerer, director of technology
- Eleanor Brinker, Latin teacher
- Myrna Hollenbeck, Prekindergarten teacher
Others who are leaving Swain for other opportunities:
- Kristen Armstrong, Head Librarian
- Kyle Armstrong, Associate Head for Academics
- Kimberly Ike, Auction Coordinator
- Christine Parente, Lower School Spanish teacher
As with the Closing Ceremonies, it was both a happy and sad occasion as we wished our colleagues well on the next chapter of their personal journeys.
Families will receive a letter later this week with updates on our faculty and staff changes for next year.
Except for an occasional special edition, this will be the last issue of Swain Stories until we return to school in the fall. Please - keep following us on Facebook, and send us photos of your summer adventures to share. Have a wonderful, inspiring, rejuvenating summer vacation!
