May 25, 2014

Greetings -

As we start the final wind-up to the end of the 2013-2014 school year, we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge a member of our Swain community who will retiring.

Celebrating Judy Skinner

On Sunday, April 27, about 70 friends and family of Judy's gathered at Cedar Crest College (Judy's alma mater) to celebrate her 23 years at Swain in the Advancement department.

Former co-worker Ronnie Sorrentino, current and former board members Vykie Whipple, Jim Nallo, Linda Noonan,  and Bill Wreaks,  former Head of School Dr. Lynald "Sils" Silsbee and current Head Todd Stansbery were joined by Judy's daughters Jen and Justine, and her brother Ken in sharing memories. There were plenty of stories of Judy's tenacity, 'getting to the point', Holiday House Tour adventures, and also a funny enactment of her aversion to heights. (Above, Ronnie likened Judy to the Energizer Bunny)

Judy's many accomplish- ments at - and for - Swain were highlighted as well. During her tenure, she helped raise over $14 million, funding capital projects such as the Umansky Library, new classrooms, athletic fields, and The McCann Center; with her assistance the school's Endowment Fund has grown to over $1.5 million.

When Judy came to Swain she was a staff of one. Over the years the responsibilities and scope of her position increased, prompting the hiring of a part-time Auction Coordinator, and full-time directors of Communications and Development. Along with the Director of Special Events, they comprise Swain's Advancement team, under Judy's leadership as Associate Head for Advancement.

Judy's many accomplishments in the greater community were noted as well, including her association with the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Junior League of the Lehigh Valley, Cedar Crest Alumnae Association, and Boys and Girls Club of Allentown, all of which she served as president. Judy had the final word with some remarks of her own, and pulled off a 'big finish' by revealing her smart new look (right).

We wish her well as she begins this new chapter of her life, and thank her for her many good efforts on behalf of Swain!
