Greetings -

On this beautiful Sunday we are thinking of all the mothers who have helped make Swain what it is today, and wishing them a Happy Mother's Day!

And speaking of mothers, here's a peek of our Mama Duck, who is safely tucked away while she sits on her nest; we will monitor her progress and keep you posted.

Today let's take a quick recap of some recent Swain happenings...

Kindergarten Science Expo

Under the guidance  of Miss Brown, our three sections of Kindergarten students gathered on Tuesday to demonstrate their science projects.

Visitors could check out "lava in a cup", "color symphony", "floating egg"
(left), "dancing raisins", among many others! With an assist from their big buddies, the young scientists were proud to show off their new knowledge. Click on the photo to see more pictures.

Outdoors we go

We have enjoyed some beautiful weather of late, and our teachers have been taking advantage of it by moving classes outside.

Mrs. Gruber's seventh grade English students did some more 'garden theatre' by acting out A Midsummer Night's Dream in our organic garden, under the pergola.

Mrs. Henning took her Kindergarten students outside to teach them the basic skills of lacrosse - hopefully they will be inspired to play on Swain's lacrosse team when they reach Middle School!

Hitting the road

Although Swain students travel all year round on field trips, the spring months bring many more off-campus adventures, among them:

Many students will remember the annual second grade trip to the Luther Davis Dairy Farm. Because the folks at the farm like Swain kids so much, our school's field trip is the only one they still schedule. That says a lot about what a good audience Swain students are!

Although the day was cold and damp, everyone had a wonderful time exploring and learning about the farm's operations - and we were glad to welcome back Miss Christensen (former second grade teacher) who still likes to go on the trip. Click here for Mrs. Scerbo's photos and here for Mrs. McClary's photos.

After following Finn's adventures in Tales of the Towpath, third graders traveled to the towpath in Easton to see for themselves what life was like for Finn.

A beautiful day full of new experi-ences, including doing the laundry with a washboard and tub, and hanging the clothes on a line to dry (left; click on photo for more images).

The fourth graders did not have
such agreeable weather for their trip to Coca Cola Park, to enjoy an IronPigs game and assorted activities. However, they were happy to see our special friend, FeFe (right), who did a good job of warming them up - it was almost as if she knows them personally!

This Week on Facebook...

If you're not a regular viewer of our Facebook posts, here are our two top posts of the week (both got more than 50 'likes' *):

From Tuesday:

We are happy to give a big shout-out to our favorite school nurse, Jennifer Shingles, as we celebrate National Nurses Week. She keeps us in ice packs, bandaids, and pain reliever - always with a smile. Thanks for all you do!

From Friday:

On this gray-ish day the flowering trees on the Swain campus look like a Monet painting - we thought you'd enjoy this watercolor by art teacher Barbara Ward, to brighten your afternoon. NOTE: Invitations are in the mail for our annual Appreciation event, in honor of our many volunteers - this artwork is on the front of the invitation.
