Greetings -

It has been another exciting week of big opportunities at The Swain School - today we're going to offer a brief recap, and tomorrow we'll send along a special edition for you to enjoy.

Third Grade "Famous Pennsylvanian" Wax Museum

Each year the third graders study "all things Pennsylvanian" - including people born or raised in the Commonwealth. After choosing one person, each student researches his or her life and creates a number of related pieces, which are then compiled into a scrapbook. On Wednesday they dressed as their "Famous Pennsyl-vanian" and posed - silently! - in our popular Wax Museum. They repeated their presentation at Wednesday evening's Social Studies Fair. Around the World in 90 Minutes: Social Studies Fair

Our sixth annual Social Studies Fair was bigger and better than ever, with the inclusion of the third grade's popular "Famous Pennsylvanian" Wax Museum. The fourth grade students culminated their research project by posing as their 'person in history' - they were truly experts! As part of their year-long study of Asia, the fifth graders created a journey through this continent, including travel brochures for each country, a world religion game, a relaxing visit to their Zen garden (above), and even 'sushi' cupcakes. Visitors had a chance to meet characters from the Antiquities (aka sixth graders), and sit in on a session where seventh graders created a new Constitution. Eighth graders used current technology - Twitter - to 'share' history and further the conversation.

At Swain, every day is Earth Day!

We celebrated Earth Day in our best Swain fashion, with outdoor adventures, student-led presentations, information about conservation, Birthday Groups, and - of course! - stories.

You've heard of "dinner theatre" - at Swain we have "garden theatre". That's right, our organic garden provided the setting for the fourth grade's presentation of Dr. Seuss' The Lorax. There was also plenty of cleaning up occurring on our campus, plus the discovery of a mother duck and her nest!

And more gardening fun...

Mrs. Akers and Mrs. Johnson report from their Prekindergarten classroom:
It must be spring because our daffodil bulbs we planted in October are up, we had a tadpole visit our classroom, one of our classmates brought in a see-through bird house to put on our window, and we planted a spring vegetable garden!
