April 6, 2014
Greetings -
On a day that is actually feeling like spring, we take one last look at March and share other news from around campus.
Out like a lion...
There's an old saying that says March comes in like a lion (i.e. bad weather) and goes out like a lamb (i.e. good weather) - but it sure seems like that lamb forgot to show up!
Enjoy these photos from first grade, as they took one last spin on the snow from the winter of 2014! Click on the photo for more images.
April is National Poetry Month
... everywhere but at Swain, where we enjoy poetry all year long!
We are very fortunate to have a year round Poet-in-Residence, Marilyn Hazelton (left), who works with our students and also supports our faculty. Mrs. Hazelton is currently on a trip to Transylvania, and we are sure she will have some good stories to tell us when she returns.
For eight years we have welcomed Visiting Poet-in-Residence Judyth Hill to our campus for two weeks, and she is in the middle of her annual visit. She works with all of students, inspiring them to use words to paint colorful, expressive poems. Here she is, below, with Miss Zepp and Miss Knerr's Kindergarten classroom.
In addition to working with students, Miss Hill offers to facilitate sessions for adult writers - novices and veterans. She will hold another session this Tuesday, April 8, from 9:15-10:30 a.m. (after the Swain Association meeting), in the Umansky Library. Everyone is welcome - bring something you've started or begin a new piece.
Miss Hill has a core group of adults with whom she's been working for several years, and they invite other adults to their Writing Celebration on Wednesday, April 9, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Community Room. These writers will present their work to the audience - a very enjoyable evening!
Now that spring has sprung
With the arrival of better weather our students are once again on the road, headed for outdoor adventures. Mrs. Scerbo's and Mrs. McClary's second grade students traveled to Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm in Stroudsburg, where they saw a working farm, utilizing techniques from the 1800's. Say, that is one big turkey - click on the photo to enjoy other pictures from their trip.
Celebrating our sports teams - and Jack!
We closed out the week with a spirited pep rally, to celebrate our spring sports teams - the girls lacrosse, boys lacrosse, and CrossFit teams. We also celebrated "Gray Dress Down Day" in which we wore gray to raise awareness about pediatric cancer, in honor of our friend Jack, a fourth grader at Swain (in the green pants, center).
There was a special dance number to celebrate Jack, and then everyone joined in for an impromptu dance fest. A great way to finish out the first week in April!
