March 9, 2014

Greetings!

We hope you enjoy this glimpse of recent activities at Swain - plus some 'arts and science' news about our alumni...

Snow fun!

Who would have guessed we would still have so much snow on the ground in early March? Our students and teachers are enjoying getting outside to enjoy the white stuff!

Check out these fun photos from Kindergarten - first grade - and second grade.

Learning about our senses

Our youngest students are learning to identify the five senses - check out these pictures from Preschool, as they experience smell, taste, hearing, touching, and sight.

How do the bubbles feel? What do oranges smell like? Do dried peas feel the same as uncooked rice?  And is that lemon sour? Click on the photo to see more pictures of their explorations!

A visit from a special guest

Our Preschool students, along with their Prekindergarten friends, had a special visitor at this week's Fun Friday activity. To help celebrate the birthday of Theodor Geisel - aka "Dr. Seuss" - team members from Target brought along their pal, the Cat in the Hat. The Swain students enjoyed hearing Dr. Seuss books from the team members, and the Cat in the Hat had fun with his new friends!

Diving into research

In preparation for their research papers - which they will present at our Social Studies Fair on April 23 -
Mrs. Coverley's fifth grade students are diving into their Asian topics. They are learning to select appropriate sources of information, record and organize the data, and develop an outline to write their final draft. These are important skills to hone as they continue their educational journey.

And news from our alumni...

We've been sharing news about the arts and sciences from our current students, so we thought you'd enjoy similar news about our young alumni:

Trodding the boards

Many of our Swain alumni go on to perform in their secondary schools' dramatic productions. Liz Burnett '10 and Gianna Rutgers '13 recently appeared in the Perkiomen School's presentation of Working, and Giuliana Augello '13 was in Shrek, presented by Southern Lehigh High School.

Last weekend, eight Swain alumni were among the cast of My Favorite Year, presented by Moravian Academy. From left: Jamie Iacono '10, Rachael Kraft '13, Olivia Morton '12, Isabelle LeBoutillier '12, Jade Appel '12, Collin Brown '10, Megan Keller '11, and Andie Burns '10.

PJAS

In addition to the 19 current Swain students, these Swain alumni also participated in the recent Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences regional competition:

Catasauqua High School: Crosley Kudla-Williams '12

Moravian Academy: Olivia Morton '12, Kevin Loughlin '12, Linda Cordero '12, Jade Appel '12, and Ethan Green '11.

Congratulations to all of our young alumni who are continuing to pursue the interests they experienced at Swain!

Thanks for reading this newsletter, and have a great week!
