Greetings!

We thought it would be a good time to shine the bright light on the Umansky Library - as we add ever more technology resources to the mix, our library remains a vital part of our school (see how much you know about it, below).

This past week we had two big fund raising events to support this important program: the annual Barnes & Noble Book Fair, and the Swain Association's "Laps for Library & Playground" run/walk events.

Barnes & Noble Book Fair

There was a way for 'everyone - everywhere' to participate in the Book Fair.

Shoppers could purchase books and other items in their local stores, or online. Swain sponsored a special evening of activities at the Promenade Shops location on Tuesday, including book signings by authors Brian Biggs (author and illustrator of the Everything Goes series, Roscoe Riley Rules series, Brownie and Pearl books and many more) and Amy Ignatow  (she had her latest book in the Popularity Paper series, Love and Other Fiascos).

The Swain community also supported its faculty by purchasing books identified by each teacher on a 'wish list' - this is always a great way to supplement books in each classroom.

Laps for Library & Playground

Cool temperatures could not diminish the fun and excitement of the fourth "Laps" walk/run fund raiser.

The Preschool and Prekindergarten students kicked things off with their event in The McCann Center. They were excited to be 'running to get more books in the library'.

Then the Kindergarten-8th graders took to the front lawn for their events. Enthusiasm was high as they covered the large course.

In addition to supporting the library, some of the funds will be earmarked for future playground improvements.

See all the photos here (many thanks to Julia Getty for capturing all of the action), as well as get details on how you can still make a donation to support this great effort!

Thanks to all of the volunteers who made this event a big success!

How much do you know about the Umansky Library?

The Umansky Library was built in 1996 as part of the Kindergarten-1st grade hallway wing addition. To honor his college roommate and longtime friend, the late Charles Umansky, former Swain Board president and alumni parent James Nallo gave a sizeable gift to underwrite the construction. Mr. Nallo has often spoken of how much his good friend valued education and that he was proud to be a teacher himself.

Mr. Nallo, along with other parents in Swain's class of 2007, spearheaded a refurbishing of the library that included upgrades to Story Mountain, painting, and new rugs and furniture. Their con-tributions help make the Umansky Library the inviting place it is today.

By the numbers:

Total items in the collection: 13,000 books, audiobooks on CD, DVDs, Kindles, Kindle ebooks

Total number of items circulated so far this year: 4,241

Magazine subscriptions: 10

Subscription databases: three (eLibrary, Culturegrams, WorldBook Online)

The library's catalog is available from home by visiting http://swain.follettdestiny.com  or using the "Destiny Quest" App

There is a Parent Collection as well as a Global Studies Resource Collection, purchased with funds from the Borgenicht Foundation.

All Preschool - 6th grade students have library class once a week; 7th and 8th graders have library as a club, once a week for a quarter.

And here's what's new in the library!

Have you checked out the Umansky Library lately?
