4th Graders hit the Big Apple - and make the news

The fourth grade students of Mrs. Reger and Miss Kleppinger traveled to New York City for the always-exciting visit to Ellis Island - this supplements their study of immigration.

The day of their trip turned out to be the first day that Ellis Island had re-opened since Superstorm Sandy hit it one year ago. It was a big media occasion, and our students' photos were featured in national publi-cations like USA Today which then appeared all over the country.

End of the month fun...

The end of October brought us many special activities - click on the photos and links to other galleries to see what we were up to!

In Lower School Spanish, Senorita Parente's 5th grade classes prepared for "Day of the Dead" by painting sugar skulls with their buddies.

Mrs. Scerbo also posted some photos from her class' meeting with their buddies.

Our PE teacher, Mrs. Henning,
put together her always-popular "Halloween Obstacle Course" - a great way to move and have fun. Mrs. Gaugler's class (right) was among those who met with older buddies from 7th grade; check out more photos from Mrs. Takacs' PK ...
Mrs. Monahan's first grade ... Miss Miller's 5th grade with their Kindergarten buddies (Mrs. Stout).

Thursday was a very busy day at Swain! We kicked things off with a Community Service Day for our 4th-8th graders. Among other places, the students traveled to Washington Elementary School (left)  to read to students; cleaned up parks and outdoor areas; interacted with older adults; carved "happy pumpkins" with little ones;  and filled donation bags at a local food bank. It was a great way to illustrate October's monthly virtue of compassion.

Then it was time to dress up and show off our costumes - the PS and PK kids kicked it off with their morning parade (right). We had a very appreciative audience before the students headed off to their parties: Preschool ... Mrs. Akers' PK ...
Mrs. Takacs' PK.

It was nip and tuck there for awhile, but the rain held off and we were able to hold our K-8 parade outside. It looked like our largest audience ever - thanks to everyone who came out to cheer us on! One of the highlights (not to take away from the kids) is to see what the Admin team will choose for their theme - this time around it was the cast of the movie, Despicable Me. Not to be outdone, the K-8 faculty appeared as the Smurfs!

Many thanks to all of the family members who supported us on all these fabulous experiences!
