Greetings!
A new school year means new editions of Swain Stories, our weekly glimpse into life at Swain. We hope you enjoy it, and share it with your families.
Back to school!
The highest excitement is in our Preschool classroom, as we welcomed the Class of 2024 for the first time. Led by teachers Mrs. Brans (pictured),
Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Viqar, the students are enjoying days filled with indoor and outdoor activities, reading, projects, and 'learning the ropes' of a new school routine.
Mrs. Pugh and Mrs. Young gathered all of their third graders together and tasked them to build the tallest free-standing tower from ten paper clips, one piece of construction paper, and a pair of scissors... they were given about 20 minutes to work together in small groups. At first, the teachers saw a lot of staring and thoughts of "how are we going to do this?". But in the end there was a 27-inch tall tower which towered above the rest - here is a picture of it with its creators, Brady, Kyle and Jack.
We use a program called "SmugMug" to post photo galleries on our Swain website - you can find a link in the upper-right hand corner of every page. There are numerous Event galleries, and many teachers have their own galleries as well.
Fifth grade teacher Miss Miller has posted a gallery of pictures from the first week - click on this photo of her students enjoying some quiet writing time, to get to the gallery.

The Middle School - 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders - kicked off the new year with their first weekly Town Meeting. This is an opportunity to share ideas as a community - during the year they will hear speakers and presentations (from each other and guests), write, move, and reflect.
Miss Hanlund demonstrates to her
Kindergarten class how to gather
on the rug each morning after free
play time. "Can we dance over to
the rug like this?" - you bet!
Mrs. Gruber brought her sixth
grade advisory together with a
special 'ice breaker' activity that
included balloons, construction
paper hands and lots of questions.

from their first week of school.
The students weren't the only ones
happy to be back - the grown-ups
got in the act too, attending the
Swain Association's two Welcome
Coffees on the first two days of
school. A good time to meet new
folks and reconnect with 'old'
friends.
