This will be our last issue of "Swain Stories" until August. We thank you for reading all of our news, and wish you a happy and safe summer!

June 16, 2013

We wrapped up the school year with two beautiful Closing Ceremonies on Monday. Check out all the photos:  Preschool-2nd grade and Grades 3-7 (right, Prekindergarten student Ian is welcomed to Kindergarten by Mr. Armstrong).

This issue focuses on student and alumni news - we recently posted two new "Alumni Profiles" to the Alumni section of our website - read all about Aditya Misra '09 and Laurel Butterfield '98 at www.swain.org/alumni.

We also remind you to keep checking Swain's Facebook page for news throughout the summer (you don't need a Facebook account to look at it - just go to www.swain.org and click in the upper right corner).

Send us photos from your summer fun, and we'll post on Facebook to share with our Swain friends. Have a great summer!

Swain Student News

Last month fourth grader Nikhil Mhatre's team, LVU 02 (representing the elite soccer club in the area, FC Lehigh Valley United), won the PA State Cup for U-10 Boys in the most competitive division.

They played the Ukranian Nationals Zoria team from the Greater Philadelphia area, winning 5-1. They are now off to the 'unofficial' national champion-ships. (Nikhil, who was the only player who was not substituted during this game, is standing, far right)

New Swain alum Marcy Bardman '13 and
her sister Brittany Bardman '15 recently won state championships for their respective age categories in the PABAR (Pennsylvania Best All Around Rider) competition - each won in the criterium (or 'crit'), a bicycle road race that consists of a closed circuit course that they complete a number of laps on.  This particular race was eight miles long on wet roads.

They are the daughters of Mrs. Cyndi Bardman, our lower school science teacher, who is also an assistant coach for the Sprinter's Edge Track Development Team that Marcy and Brittany are on.  Several other Swain students participate on the team: Abby Bardman '17, Arnav Krishna '16, Dhruv Krishna '16, Esha Sharma '16, and Zoe Sharpe '15.

(Mrs. Bardman is pictured with Marcy at the Bike Assembly held the last week of school - click on it for more photos; Olympic cyclist Bobby Lea and National Champion cyclist Barry Miller were on hand to help out with the interesting demonstration of how cyclists train.)

The students have been working out several times a week for three-four hours at a time all winter.  They now work out or race six days a week for two-four hours at a time during the summer. For those interested: all Swain riders will be racing on Thursday, June 20 from 5-8 p.m. at the Velodrome for Bicycle Racing League Finals.
