June 9, 2013

Wow!

We are almost done with an amazing 2012-2013 school year, and it has certainly been a great one.

We celebrated the Class of 2012 with grad_flag a beautiful graduation ceremony on Friday (click on the photo for many more images), and tomorrow we will hold our Preschool-2nd grade Closing Ceremony (at 8:30 a.m.) and the 3rd-7th grade Closing Ceremony (at 10:30 a.m.). It will be a time to acknowledge all the fun and learning we've shared - you are encouraged to join us!

NOTE: Next weekend will be our last weekly "Swain Stories" for awhile - we will start up again in August. Keep following our Swain stories on our Facebook page!

Buddies are big at Swain

PK_buddies The Buddy program is an integral part of our Swain community - older classes partner with younger ones, and throughout the year they gather regularly to do activities, read, and get to know each other in countless ways. (As Wyatt and Aedryss demonstrate, left) The end of the year is a special time to say 'good-bye', knowing the friendships will continue long afterward.

Check out photos from Mrs. Akers and Mrs. Johnson's PK class - Mrs. Pugh's third grade - and Mrs. Reger's fourth grade.

Field trips and outings

Trips off campus are plentiful throughout the school year, and the end of the school year is no different!

The Kindergarten kids and their families Harrisburg enjoyed an off-campus picnic, and the Prekindergarten students visited all the animals at the Lehigh Valley Zoo

The third graders (right)  culminated their year-long study of 'all things Pennsylvanian' with their annual trip to the state capitol in Harrisburg.

In the classroom

Not all the action was outside the classrooms this past week - there was plenty to do and celebrate indoors.

5_banquet The fifth graders have been studying the Asian countries all year, and on Tuesday they rolled out their "Asian Extravaganza Bonanza", with a wide variety of foods from Japan, China, Thailand, India, and Greece (among others). Milo contemplates a dumpling, which he is expertly managing with his chop sticks.

Say, those teachers look different! Yes, it 1_teachers was Sofie (left, pinch-hitting for Mrs. Gaugler) and Ava (subbing for Mrs. Monahan) as part of the "Be the First Grade Teacher for a Day" offering from our recent Auction. The new teachers took attendance, helped the first graders with math and reading, read to them, and celebrated with an afternoon ice cream party. Click for more photos.

4_Span-play Putting all the pieces together to present a play is challenging enough - how about when it's in Spanish? The fourth graders did that with Senorita Parente, and there's even a video of their (exemplary) finished product!

And outdoor fun!

As part of their "Asian Extravaganza 5_cricket Bonanza", fifth graders were treated to an afternoon of learning cricket (a bat-and-ball game that originated in England and traveled to India, where it is very popular).

Dhruv and Arnav's dad (right, pictured with Raymond) was the instructor, and the class had a great time playing this new game!
