April 28, 2013

Greetings!

We have a lot to share from this past week, so let's get right to it:

Judyth Hill brings poetry excitement!

As third grader Ella demonstrates, this is how we do poetry at Swain! Our visiting Poet-in-Residence Judyth Hill shared her energetic approach to poetry these past two weeks (including a special evening showcase by her adult writers' group).

Enjoy these photos from Mrs. McClary and Miss Zataveski's Kindergarten class - Mrs. Gaugler's first graders - Mrs. Scerbo's second grade class - and the Lower School Town meeting, taken by Mrs. Getty.

On the road...

In addition to being National Poetry Month, April is also a big month for field trips at Swain. The second graders recently did their annual visit to the Luther Davis Dairy Farm (right: Devin makes a new friend). In addition to the up-close look at the dairy farm operations, the students also saw - and were part of - the filming of a PBS special about the farm.

The third grade classes visited the Hugh-Moore Canal Park, where they rode a canal boat - and then had to pull it! On another trip they had a jam-packed day full of history when they toured the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, Trout Hall and then the Erwin-Stover House.

Sixth grade headed off to the Museum of Tolerance in New York City, and - after learning how to tie flies on Monday - the fifth graders spent Thursday fly-fishing at Mill Creek.

Coming soon -

Last night at our 21st annual Auction & Dinner Gala - among many other highlights - the very popular video that showcases the Live Auction items was premiered to rave reviews.

Created by teachers Julia Getty (Wellness) and Lindsay Quinn (Drama), the video takes a look at classic cinema, Swain-style, starring an all-star cast of our students (and a couple of cameos).

We will have it available for online viewing soon, and will let you know when it's up.
