Another exciting week at The Swain School - let's read all about it (and make sure to scroll to the bottom to read about our Swain alumni):

The Little Mermaid is a school-wide success!

Although The Little Mermaid is a middle school production, it actually reaches far into the entire school. And not just that so many families of all ages attended the three sold-out performances!

Director Lindsay Quinn utilized the production in a number of her drama classes. She gave a tour of the backstage area so her drama students could see the scenery and 'behind the scenes' workings of the show.

Kindergarten and first grade students studied the structure of a musical, and put on their own modified version of Peter Pan.

gr1_LittleMermaid Senorita Christine Parente - our Lower School Spanish teacher who created the vibrant choreography for the Swain show - showed the Spanish version of The Little Mermaid video to her first grade students. They took notes - in Spanish - as they viewed it, then discussed the characters and plot.

Fourth grade Writing Lab students enjoyed a visit from John Getty - Clara's dad and the set designer/builder. Julia Getty (co-facilitator of Writing Lab and Clara's mom), the set dresser/painter also joined in the discussion about how the scenery - or book illustrations - add to the visual story-telling of a piece. The fourth graders are working on graphic novels, so took this information into consideration as they developed their own stories.

The younger students got a "Sneak Peek" of the production on Thursday afternoon - this was the first time the cast had a live audience, and our students were a terrific one!

gulls And of course our 5th-8th graders enjoyed the experience of putting together a full-fledged musical production, integrating singing with a live orchestra, acting, choreography, costume changes (lots of them!), and moving scenery. Several students also worked 'behind the scenes' to learn, first-hand, all that goes into supporting such a big undertaking. Great learning all around!

Thanks to EVERYONE who supported this big opportunity with its amazing results!

There are literally hundreds of photos to review - click on any of the above photos to go to a brief overview of the show - many more photos to come! Double-click on any photo to save it.

And preserve the memory of Swain's show - order a DVD of the production for $25. Please note that the order needs to be sent directly to the videographer, Mike Reiner - DVDs will be sent directly to you.

They have had their turn on the Swain stage - now many Swain alumni are thrilled to return to support the annual middle school production.
