Another fun week at Swain... here are a few moments that reflect some of the many traditions at our school:
8th grade Inspiration Speeches
For the past five years eighth grade students have been asked to write and present an "Inspiration Speech", about someone or some-thing that inspires their life. Over the years we have heard about family members, celebrities, car-toons, artwork and music, among other inspirations.
Giuliana (right) led off the Class of 2013's presentations with a speech about her grandmother Marian - who was in attendance but who had no idea she was to be the topic of her granddaughter's speech.
Sweetheart Tea
A long-standing tradition at Swain - the Prekindergarten Sweetheart Tea - got a new twist this year when the Preschool students and their sweethearts joined in the fun! The festive event included doing crafts and projects together, a rousing performance (with optional tissues for the sweethearts), and refreshments.
Each student and his/her sweet-heart also received a commem-orative photo to put in a gaily-decorated frame. (Click on the photo of Penny C. and her mom Angie to see the rest of the Preschool photos, and here for the Prekindergarten pictures.)
Happy Valentine's Day
Another long-standing tradition - and not exclusive to Swain - is to give valentines to your classmates.
First grader Hayden (right) is all seriousness as he places his valentines in the brightly-decorated bags.
What did that owl eat?
Fourth grade science students at Swain look forward to dissecting owl pellets in Mrs. Stachina's class. Or - as Leland decribed it: "owl throw up". The students (including Leland, left, and Patrick) carefully pick through the gray mess to discover the owl's last meal of rodents - as evidenced by tiny skulls, teeth, and other body parts.
Counting the days...
Another long-standing tradition at Swain is the Kindergarten class' celebration of the 100th day of school, coming up this Wednesday (unless we have a snow day before then!).
Among the many activities they do as they prepare for this big day, each student prepares a visual representation of 100 items - like these 100 seashells that Rosie collected (right). Stop by the Small Dining Room to see the many interesting projects displayed on the stage!
Parent-Teacher Conferences
This was the scene at 7:00 a.m. Friday in The McCann Center when families and middle school families started meeting for the next round of conferences.
Although it may not look like it, more than half a dozen families answered the early morning call, and more dropped in throughout the morning to meet with their children's teachers.
And at the end of the day...
Many families close out the school day by reuniting in our Community Room for after-school pick up.
Here, grandma Ruth Mary shares a quiet moment with PK grand-daughter Murathimeningai while they wait for brother Mwendwa.
