It was a long contest, but after multiple rounds (that spanned two days), sixth grader Emma (far left) emerged as our middle school Spelling Bee champ. Seventh grader Randi proved a very able opponent in this nail-biter! Emma will represent Swain at the next level of the competition. Congratulations to all of our spelling bee contestants! Fourth grade students showed off the results of their study of peace, slavery and justice - Leland (left) and Anna show off the Freedom Quilt they created, at a recent Lower School Town Meeting. Fifth grade students in Mrs. Coverley's class got together with their Prekindergarten friends from Mrs. Takacs' and Mrs. Hollenbeck's class to create a village of penguins. This was part of the PK students' study of arctic animals. Click on the photo of Noel (far left) and Anna to see more pictures. The PK students also got to visit arctic animals 'up close and personal' at an exhibit at Muhlenberg College. In addition to seeing a very large stuffed polar bear, they could examine a polar bear skull too. Click on the photo to see more pictures from their field trip.
More exotic creatures, when Mrs. Bardman arranged for our favorite paleontologists to come to visit Swain - this time with ancient undersea creatures! Students in Kindergarten, first grade and second grade were dazzled with the size of the extinct animals.

From prehistoric, to present-day: our fifth graders used Skype technology to have an 'in person' visit with Margi Praus, author of a favorite fifth grade read, Heart of a Samurai. The students were able to ask Ms. Praus about her book - which supplements their Asian studies - as well as talk about the writing process with her. We love technology!
