GET SM'ART!

36th Mayor's Arts Awards a Smash!

2014 Mayor's Arts Awards

Agents in the Arts showed up in record numbers last night. Over 428 people joined Mayor Chris Beutler and our proud Lincoln Arts Council staff to celebrate the arts that make Lincoln stand out.

We offer our sincere secret agent in the arts applause to all of the wonderful volunteers that helped make this year's GET SM'ART Mayor's Arts Awards so special. From board members, committee chairs, and to friends we wrangled in to decorative chores. LAC couldn't have done it with such finesse without your tireless efforts. It was a night to remember!

We lift our "cone of silence" to shout---THANK YOU to our "Agents in the Arts."

Community Supported Art - A Purchase with Power

Join Ted Kooser, who was both a CSArtist and a share-holder for 2013!

Do you enjoy the feeling of making a purchase that will have a positive impact?

Community Supported Art does exactly that on a number of fronts: artist employment, arts education, collector engagement and arts council support; all with the single purchase of an art share!

Nine local artists received a commission to create 50 pieces of art especially for our share-holders. A tenth piece of art is supplied by Lincoln Public Schools high school students. Art shares are $400 each with $50 going to the Lincoln Arts Council and the remainder divided among the artists. The students' share provides for a teaching artist to work with them in the classroom to enhance their experience of "creating for commission." Art shares are priced for collector accessibility (10 pieces of original art for $40 each), but also with the idea that share-holders are potential future patrons of the professional artists featured. The art is delivered in installments at public events providing an opportunity for collectors to connect relationally with the artists as well as receiving some of their work. Not interested in collecting for yourself? Consider the pieces for personal or professional gifts. Not interested in all ten pieces? Consider purchasing your share with a friend. Few investments accomplish so much!

First Art Share Delivery

The first delivery of art shares is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17 during Jazz in June. Look for the Lincoln Arts Council along with exclusive sponsor, Union Bank and Trust in front of The Lied Centre as part of the Jazz in June Marketplace. Meet some of our participating artists and take a look at the pieces included in the first delivery. It's not too late to become a shareholder yourself!

"Awesome Artists" Showcase

To celebrate the end of the school year and recognize the hard work and achievements that occurred in the Belmont CLCs this year, AmeriCorps members Alma and Josh participated in a CLC Showcase for friends and families of students in the Belmont CLCs. "Awesome Artists" had many, many pieces of artwork to show off, and they enjoyed the opportunity to meet parents and hear how much their children appreciated being a part of this club. "Awesome Artists" has been such a valuable experience - not just to the children who were involved, but to Alma and Josh as well. We hope that these students will continue to embrace their passion for art and keep creating as they move forward - some of them to fifth grade, and some to middle school. Thank you to Belmont for providing this outreach opportunity, and thank you to those that have supported this programming throughout the year!

Arts in the Schools: Janine Copple at Everett Elementary

During the month of April, Everett Elementary's 4th, 5th, and ELL classes were able to experience the art of printmaking through an artist residency. Made possible by the Nebraska Arts Council, AmeriCorps members at the Lincoln Arts Council were able to bring Janine Copple, a local printmaking artist, into the classrooms of a public school.

This three week long residency worked with over 150 students, each developing their own print. The process started out creating a collograph plate using found materials and objects. These plates were then inked and ran through a press. Students loved turning the wheel of the old press and seeing the paper being peeled as a reverse image from the plate. An overlay was also printed over their print. Students thought up creative titles that related to their abstract prints, these titles were then set in block type and printed. It was amazing to see students coming up with such expressive and relatable titles! These titles were funny, like "Banana World," or serious like "Distant Land." The students loved getting messy and being able to do a large project like printmaking.

At the end of this residency we had a showcase open to family and friends that showed off the prints that the students had made. The students were proud and excited to see the work that they had done presented for the school. Many thanks to the Nebraska Arts Council, Everett Elementary School, and the AmeriCorps program for making this program possible. A special thank you to Everett Art Specialist Andrea Jenkins and LPS Art Curriculum Supervisor Lorinda Rice for helping coordinate the details and make this residency a success and a pleasure for everyone involved.

articleFeatured Project: Lincoln Community Playhouse's The Penguin Project, June 13-15

The Penguin Project ® was conceived by Dr. Andrew Morgan to give children with disabilities an opportunity to participate in the performing arts. "Dr. Andy" is a developmental pediatrician and the former Head of the Division of Child Development at the University of Illinois in Peoria. He is the primary medical specialist in Central Illinois involved in the diagnosis and treatment of children with disabilities, but has also directed and performed in many community theater productions in the area. He created The Penguin Project ® recognizing that theater not only provides children with a valuable recreational experience and an opportunity to display their creative talents, but also enhances social interaction, communication skills, assertiveness, and self-esteem. The Penguin Project ® strives to demonstrate that individuals with disabilities are fully capable of participating in community activities with the same dedication and enthusiasm as others, if given opportunity and support.

The origin of the name "Penguin Project" comes from the unique characteristics of penguins. They are extremely playful and curious, and work well together. More importantly, they have a "disability" that distinguishes them from other birds - they can't fly!! Instead, penguins waddle and toboggan on their bellies over the snow, and are excellent swimmers in the water. So like our young artists, they have adapted to the challenges of their environment, and have not allowed their unique difference to interfere with their lives.

Performances are June 13-15. Don't miss this great opportunity. For more information: http://www.lincolnplayhouse.com/education/penguinproject.html
