2011 Lincoln Arts Festival

Beginning Friday, February 7th, the Lincoln Arts Council will be accepting applications for participation in the 2014 Lincoln Arts Festival that takes place on September 27th and 28th. This premier art event in Lincoln brings over one hundred artists from all over the country to SouthPointe Pavilions for a fun weekend of art sales and demonstrations. Great weather brought thousands of art lovers last year. We expect to grow this year with more great artists, memorable food and fabulous live music wrapped in a festival atmosphere that everyone enjoys.

If selling your art in an outdoor, festival setting seems like a good idea, go to www.zapplication.org
to find out about our festival, and many other festivals all over the country. You will submit your application online on Zapplication. Photos and a $25 jury fee are required, with easy instructions right on Zapplication. Join us for a great weekend at a festival that many of our artists say is their favorite.  Contact melissa@artscene.org if you have any questions on applying.  We look forward to seeing you and your artwork at the 2014 Lincoln Arts Festival!

  The Ultimate Goal: Improving Lives"undefined

Improving Lives Whether you are the one with the vision or strategy, the one with resources to deploy or the one trying to make it work day-to-day, the ultimate goal is improving lives. This seems to be a natural impulse for human-kind (broadly speaking) and is incorporated into the mission statement of many organizations. The Lincoln Arts Council is among them.

Your passion, your interests and your life experiences influence how you think about what constitutes "improved lives." There is no "one size fits all" program that alone will cure all ills. Naturally, those of us serving the arts feel strongly about the powerful life-changing effects it can exert. We believe that to inspire a creative community, to promote all the art that Lincoln has to offer and to work toward sustainable arts programs, organizations and professional artists is all about improving lives. Not just the lives of those we serve directly, but of the whole community.

Thanks to a recent study summarized in the New York Times ("Art Makes You Smart" Nov 23, 2013) there is continuing evidence that even casual exposure to art has demonstrably positive outcomes. "Clearly... we can conclude that visiting an art museum exposes students to a diversity of ideas that challenge them with different perspectives on the human condition. Expanding access to art, whether through programs in schools or through visits to area museums and galleries, should be a central part of any school's curriculum." Together, we are improving lives!

Artist Residencies in LPS are Underway

Carrie Strope

We are excited to announce that the Lincoln Arts Council has received the grant for Artists in Schools and Communities from the Nebraska Arts Council! This is our fifth year to have this opportunity. The grant, headed up by our AmeriCorps members, Alma Cerretta and Joshua Thorne, will allow for two artist residencies within Lincoln Public Schools. The focus of these residencies is to directly impact underprivileged students and give them exposure to diverse art forms and local artists. The AmeriCorps are also looking to develop academic engagement and improve literacy skills.

The first residency begins February 3rd at Elliott Elementary and will last three weeks. First and fourth grade students will have a chance to work with Jordan Buschur. Buschur is a local painter and was the recipient of the Kimmel Emerging Artist Award at the 2013 Mayor's Arts Awards. Students will be creating handmade books incorporating storytelling, painting, and drawing. At the end of the residency there will be a public show to celebrate the wonderful experience.

Rain Barrel article

Artistic Rain Barrels 2014 For a sixth year, local artists will be challenged to creatively paint rain barrels with a prairie theme to celebrate the important roles that prairies play in water quality. The Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center and the City of Lincoln Watershed Management will select artists based on their applications addressing the prairie theme. Teachers are encouraged to apply for their class as this activity can be used as a teaching tool in their classroom. A total of 25 artists will be selected for this year's program.

Selected artists have five weeks to paint and return their barrels. The barrels will be on display with interpretative signage at SouthPointe Pavilions during the month of April 2014, and will be available for purchase on the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center website for the month of April. All proceeds will support the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center educational information for exhibits and other environmental education programs.

Her next exhibit "Shutterfold: Capturing the Moment" opens January 12 at The Immanuel Fine Arts Gallery at The Landing at Williamsburg Village and runs through April 25.
