2011 Lincoln Arts Festival

Your Once-A-Year tour of American Art is just around the corner...

Artists from 16 states, including both coasts and a great selection from our own region are eager to show you their latest work. They'll be in the West parking lot at SouthPointe Pavilions this September 28th and 29th. Show hours are the same as last year, Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM till 5:00 PM. We're into our second decade with new food vendors, world music in the entertainment pavilion, and an expanded Festival Patron program. We've got a great mix of disciplines and price points - you WILL find a lot of things you like.

The Huskers are resting on festival weekend so here's your opportunity to come and explore and take home something custom made, beautiful, wearable or useful. Possibly all four at once! Some past favorites will be there, including Wendell Turner from Andover, Kansas, with his amazing, life-size palm trees; and Jonathon Stopper, up from Florida with jewelry to die for. And some new friends, like our three new emerging artists; and Jennifer Ivory, down from Oregon with insect sculptures so amazing you'll marvel at both their beauty and the artistry in their making. Last year's Best of Show winner, Marc Kornbluh is back with his wonderful glass and so is Sandy Hunter with her lovely watercolor landscapes that would look terrific in your home. Come enjoy the festival, because it really is a festival, but stay for the artists and savor their new works.

Community Supported Art

Take your standard-issue Farmers Market, mix in an exquisite, late-summer day; add conversation and laughter to taste, spice it with art and music, and simmer everything together for four hours on a Sunday. The result is a gentle magic of celebration- of people appreciating each other and the power of art to bring us together. This is a recipe that was perfectly accomplished on August 4th at the Old Cheney Farmers Market.

A delighted Mayor Beutler was there, an amazed KMTV from Omaha was there. So were shareholders Carl Eskridge and Georgia Glass among others. Artists Ted Kooser and Daniel Martinez talked with lots of people about the benefits of a CSArt program. Many of you were there as well, and thanks. With apologies to Mayor Beutler, the real mayor of the event was Catherine Griesen, who gave dozens of tours of her leather journals. Her gentle joy was perfectly matched by the smiles of discovery on the shareholders. It was a grand good time, and Daniel Martinez provided a perfect dessert with his private concert later in the day.

We're going to turn up the heat for our last distribution, and encourage participation by the whole city. We'll have live music, food vendors, sidewalk chalk art, kids art and music activities, lots of things to remind the city that art should have a place in their lives. Join us at Union Plaza at 21st and Q streets from 2pm to 4pm on September 15th. Shareholders can pick up their art, and everyone can have a good time.

Arts Festival Sponsors Do the Heavy Lifting

We hope you will make the Lincoln Arts Festival part of your weekend plans for September 28 and 29. It is the best opportunity you will have to enjoy the variety of artists we present, both from Lincoln and the region.

As a non-profit community service provider, we consistently have to think creatively about generating needed support for our programs and operations at the same time that we design and place those services around Lincoln. One benefit of the Arts Festival is the underwriting it generates for the Arts Council. The key to this event being a successful benefit is the support we receive from festival sponsors. We are pleased to offer our endorsement of these community leaders who invest in arts support (new additions in red):

Cornerstone Sponsors: Ameritas and RBC Wealth Management

Festival Sponsors: Jerry and Annette Hall, Wells Fargo Bank, Amtrak and Lincoln 55+ Senior Newspaper

Family Activities Tent Sponsors: Kinder Porter Scott Family Foundation and Whole Foods

Creative Conversations...

Creative Conversations

Where: At the downtown Mill Coffee Shop

When: Friday mornings from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM (...or stop by for a few minutes)

(We're starting up again on August 30th after Friday Live visits Kearny on the 23rd)

Why:   1. A chance to talk to your friends and the Arts Council about art in Lincoln

            2. A chance to meet artists from across the state in every possible arts discipline

            3. Great coffee

            4. A chance to get help and advice about your next art project or idea

            5. It's just a great idea

When we started Creative Conversations it was an idea from the Americans for the Arts in Washington, DC and a part of Arts & Humanities Month. We had no idea what would happen. There were many ideas: formal/informal, agenda/catalyst idea, audio record/take minutes, discussion leaders, comment cards- the list was long. We tried many of them. But over time it became clear that artistic ideas often have a fragile infancy and will quickly hide from close scrutiny and loud noises. But in the company of friends they may grow, strengthen and possibly flourish. We like that.

Creative Conversations, as a forum for discussion of all things artistic, has become an informal, entertaining, embracing collection of tables full of interesting people. Participants come and go, notes are taken, photos are shown, coffee is consumed and to an outside observer, nothing much is going on. Look again carefully and you find that there's lots of ideas running around- comments, kudos, complaints, travel stories, gossip and some very, very good ideas that might become the Next-Big-Thing. We hope so. Join us.
