Mayor's Arts Awards a Great Success
The Lied Center's main stage was a very happy place on the 12th of June. Michele Tilley's marvelous invitation brought a capacity crowd to enjoy music, food and the delighted smiles from the awardees. A beautifully produced tongue-in-cheek video showed some shocking decision making at city hall, and introduced our award winners with a smile. As playful as he was in the video, Mayor Beutler was all business as he presented the awards, clearly enjoying the opportunity to celebrate the arts in Lincoln.
Our dear friend, the late William Stibor kept the evening moving along and on time with his usual grace and good humor. He has been the voice of the Mayor's Arts Awards, and the arts in Lincoln for some time and we are going to miss him a great deal. But on Wednesday the 12th, it was all about celebrating the accomplishments of this year's award winners with a particularly wonderful and festive evening. Go to ArtScene.org to learn more about this year's winners, and join us next year for Lincoln's best celebration of the arts.

Volunteers, Sponsors, Community Members and Support Staff Definitely "Win With the Arts"
Wednesday, June 12, the 35th Annual Mayor's Arts Awards was enjoyed by an enthusiastic crowd of about 350 who gathered on the Main Stage of the Lied Center. It was a milestone year in many ways, the most poignant of which has become that it was the last Mayor's Arts Awards to be hosted by our great friend, William Stibor (NET Radio Music Director and host of "Friday Live" )who died suddenly on June 17.
Thirteen award-winners were honored, each receiving a beautiful, original quilted award made by textile artist, Lora Rocke. A 14th category sponsored by Enerson Urban Design recognized three partners who worked together to make the Antelope Valley Parkway a reality. Tying the evening's live narrative together was a very clever video written and produced by Diane Gonzolas, filmed and edited by Kent Taylor. Winners were shown in a variety of settings around the city playing a game of one sort or another. Even our executive director, Deb Weber and Mayor Chris Beutler got in on the acting!

It's official... The jury has done their work, the invitations have been sent and many artists have already responded. We're moving forward in a very satisfying way.
It's a process, putting on an arts festival. Logistics preparations, marketing planning, musical entertainment procurement, volunteer coordination- these and many more tasks each have their season, but it's the artists that are at the center of all our preparations. We search for artists through email, press releases, our artist management partner- Zapplication.org, even in conversations with local galleries and art centers.
It's not easy for an artist to market their work in a festival setting. It's a lot of work, it's generally outdoors, you need a canopy or tent as well as display fixtures, and of course, you need a significant body of work. And then there's the weather! So we do everything we can to get the word out that our September festival is fun, full of interested buyers and a great festival to have your work be seen.

Now, aren't you jealous?
Pretty much everyone is that didn't get a share in LAC's Community Supported Art program. We had our first art distribution event at Jazz in June on the 18th, and what a completely delightful party it was. Our first three artists were Margaret Berry with her encaustics, Marc Kornbluh with his blown glass teacups, and Linda Stephen with her origami landscapes. Most of the other participating artists also stopped by to talk with people as well, and it was a lovely and engaging evening.
But the most fun was had by the three distributing artists as they talked about their work with the shareholders picking up their art. Linda showed swatch books of the handmade Japanese paper she uses. Many times she could be heard giving directions to Martin's Orchard, which could be seen depicted in her landscapes in all four seasons. Marc made trip after trip across the street, holding a cup to the sunshine, to explain the coloration and how he achieved it. Patrons were very impressed. Margaret took the prize for enthusiasm, encouraging her patrons to open her box on the spot. Many smiles, and no small amount of hopping-in-excitement were to be seen.
All in all, the first of our three art distribution events was a roaring good time. We expect the second to be just as much fun. Join us at the Old Cheney Farmers Market on Sunday, August 4th, from 10:00am to 2:00pm as we distribute the work of Ted Kooser, Daniel Martinez, and Margaret Griesen. Veggies to buy, music, street food, and artists to chat with- what's not to love?

A Fundraising Update from the end of June
The calendar year is at the mid-point and our fiscal year is in its final quarter, ending on August 31. In any given year, we conduct two GIVING CAMPAIGNS (End of Calendar Year and Spring), two MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGNS (Arts Organizations in the fall and Individuals in the summer) and two big FUND-RAISING EVENTS (Mayor's Arts Awards in June and Lincoln Art Festival in September). Altogether, these events generate about 45% of our annual budget. The remainder is made up of public grants (29%), private foundation grants (16%), programs & services (9%) and investment income (1%).
This year has been especially challenging from a financial point of view. We know that many of us both privately and professionally are still feeling the pinch of our "new fiscal reality." We also experienced staff transition late in 2012 and we are in a season of board re-building with the goal of filling the maximum number of positions (27). For a variety of known reasons (and no-doubt unknown), our December 2012 campaign fell short of budget. One bright spot is our Spring Campaign, which reached 89% of our $8,200 goal and exceeded our budget projection for this item. The 35th Annual Mayor's Arts Awards was a triumph as an event, but generated little more than its own expenses. When it comes to fund-raising events, it is largely sponsorships that generate the income in the equation. This event was not fully sponsored and expenses exceeded the original budget. In addition, two of our basic support grant applications were not fully funded.

7th annual City of Lincoln National Arts ProgramŽ
The National Arts ProgramŽ was established in 1982 to identify, showcase, and reward the visual artistic talent in America. The program sponsors 82 venues in 38 states. Coordinated by the AmeriCorps staff at the Lincoln Arts Council, this is the seventh year Lincoln has had the chance to offer this opportunity to our community. Every year, the National Arts Program invites City of Lincoln Employees and Lincoln Public Schools and their family members to participate in this exhibition opportunity. The National Arts Program is designed to give visual artists, at all skill levels, an uninhibited opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional manner and to compete for cash prizes. This exhibit is judged by professional artists and visual art professionals in Amateur, Intermediate, Professional, Teen and Youth classifications, and it is free to all.
This year the program has 66 registered participants who will exhibit 110 pieces of artwork. Eligibility for this program requires that the artwork has been created within the last 3 years and fits into one of the six categories which include: Painting, Works on Paper, Photography, Sculpture, Craft, and Mixed Media.
The Lincoln Arts Council invites the community of Lincoln to attend the opening reception and presentation of awards, which will be held at Bennett Martin Library on July 12, 2013 at 6pm.

Michele Tilley, Artist, Activist, Patron
Look at Michele Tilley and you may see the owner of Chocolate Cake Design, an award-winning graphic design company. Look again and you may see one of the nine inaugural artists of Lincoln's Community Supported Art program. Look a third time and the President Elect of Downtown Lincoln Rotary Club #14 appears. Every truly engaged person wears a lot of different hats, but few manage to do so many things so well as Michele Tilley.
Start with her ability to communicate. Chocolate Cake's design work has ranged from dramatic and emotional appeals for the Arbor Day Foundation to the quirky, we're-having-fun-here maps for the Downtown Lincoln Association. The Downtown Lincoln Association maps won the American Package Design Award for 2011 and have become a favorite tool for exploring Lincoln's downtown.
