Mayor's Arts Awards

We are less than two months away from the 35th Annual Mayor's Arts Awards!

The event is scheduled for Wednesday, June 12 on the Main Stage at The Lied Center. This gala evening includes a fine meal from The Venue along with presentations of 14 awards by Mayor Chris Beutler. Part of the entertainment for the evening is video footage of each of the award winners in place of traditional acceptance speeches. Attendees are invited to participate in additional fund-raising activities through the evening.  In addition to providing a platform for bringing together artists, art patrons, students, corporate partners and city officials in a celebration of artistic commitment, achievement and support, proceeds from the Mayor's Arts Awards provide about 9% of our annual budget. This would not be possible without contributions from our award sponsors. We are proud to include these individuals, organizations and businesses among our financial underwriters.

Please help us to THANK the following: James C. and Rhonda Seacrest Foundation (Event Sponsor); Jerry & Annette Hall, US Property and Grand Manse, Liberty First Credit Union and Steve Wake (Video Sponsors); Ann Rawley, Larry and Nancy Bird (Project Supporters); and these Award Sponsors: A to Z Printing, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Nebraska, RunzaŽ Restaurants, Bequest to Lincoln Arts Council from Dr. Richard Hay, Gladys Lux Foundation, Talent Plus, Inc., Joe and Judye Ruffo, Lincoln Community Foundation, Nebraska Literary Heritage Association, Cline,Williams, Wright, Johnson & Oldfather, LLP, The Richard P. Kimmel and Laurine Kimmel Charitable Foundation and Clark Enersen Partners. Cornhusker Bank and the Nearsouth Neighborhood Association co-sponsored an award and provided for five scholarship tickets enabling students and staff from Clinton Elementary 'artist in residence' program to attend the award ceremony.

Tickets will be available starting May 1. Watch for your invitation by mail or click here to download your reservation form. Deadline: June 1.

Look for Lincoln Arts Council during Give to Lincoln Day - May 16

Give to Lincoln Day

The purpose of Give to Lincoln Day (G2LD) is threefold:  Raise awareness of the work we do in our community, to raise funds and to raise new donors for our organization. For the second year, LAC will participate in 24 hours of giving organized by the Lincoln Community Foundation. This year, at least 215 non-profit organizations have registered.

You may give online at http://givetolincoln.razoo.com/story/Lincoln-Arts-Council. Checks received in our office before 4:00 pm on May 16 should be made payable to Lincoln Community Foundation with Lincoln Arts Council in the memo. We will deliver them on May 16 so they can be counted in the GIVE TO LINCOLN DAY total. Online gifts made at the Lincoln Arts Council Razoo site can be designated as weekly, monthly or annual transactions. (Consider an easy, regular gift made to LAC automatically.) Every donation you make on May 16th helps LAC even more because we will also receive a proportional share of the $200,000 challenge match pool!

Looking for Golfers and Artists for the LAC Golf Scramble
Fore Arts, Fore Fun - The MacCrakken Brothers
Clubs won't be making the only strokes on the green of the Lincoln Arts Council's golf scramble scheduled for Friday, July 26. We hope to have a few paint brushes out there, too! The idea is to incorporate fun, creative experiences into the day and that's where artists in the community are invited to get involved! If you have a musical, theatrical, or visual art experience you'd like to lend to the day, please contact us. We would like to have at least nine of 18 holes with a resident artist. We have a little theatre and Scots culture built in with Ian and Angus, the MacCrakken Brothers. These two mad Scots will add to the challenge of the game with their "witherin' tongue-lashin'" of everyone within earshot.

Download the registration brochure or visit our Fore Arts Fore Fun web page for more details.

Lincoln Arts Festival Application Deadline!

2013 Lincoln Arts Festival Call for Artists

Last year was one of the best Lincoln Arts Festivals ever, with perfect weather, great attendance, new and delicious food vendors, and great festival energy. This year, the dates are September 28th and 29th, at SouthPointe Pavilions' west parking lot. 2013's festival promises to be bigger and better than ever, with great artists, new food and music.

Local artists who enjoy a festival setting and would like to be a part of the festival should remember that our juried show has an application deadline of May 15th. Applications may be completed online at Zapplication.org. If you've never gone to Zapplication.org before, setting up an artist profile is easy and costs nothing. You will then have access to loads of information on our festival and many others. Remember, our application deadline is May 15th. Join us for a good time.

Community Supported ArtLincoln's own CSArt project is off to an amazing start, with great interest from both artists and art patrons. All fifty of our $300 patron shares were sold within three days, which is common in much larger markets, but a pleasant surprise for Lincoln. On the artist side, 35 artists vied for 9 positions, and just as many artists told us they were interested but unable to produce a proposal in time. What's clear is that Lincoln's arts community has recognized a great opportunity in this model of arts commerce. Artists and patrons alike are delighted with the opportunity for conversation and relationships.

There are three upcoming art distribution events and we think you might be interested in meeting the exceptional artists, 2 or 3 at a time, in the order their work will be distributed. Two of the artists at Jazz in June on the 18th will be:

More Than 50 Years of Putting Kids' Creativity to the Test

Art Flares

So why bother measuring creativity? James Catterall, a psychologist and director of the Centers for Research on Creativity in Los Angeles, says the simple answer is that if society, business and education demands it, then we need to know when it's happening; otherwise, we're just guessing when it's there.

Cameron's Cause delivers $1,800 in art supplies to hospitals

Cameron Steinblock always has been an artist.

And at age 6, he became a philanthropist.

After a six-day stay at Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center, the kindergartner decided he wanted to help other sick children.Cameron asked his mother for a bucket and a piece of paper. He wanted to walk door to door and collect art supplies and money to give to children at the hospital.
