December 2012 Issue #60

End of Year Support for the Lincoln Arts Council

Support the Lincoln Arts Council What does the Lincoln Arts Council do that is most meaningful to you?

Are you involved with us in the way you would like?

Could you see yourself being more involved or perhaps involved in a new way?

The great strength - and a constant challenge - of being an organization in service to our community is making sure we provide opportunities for all interested persons to contribute to our common goal: to inspire and facilitate the arts among us. Your input is invaluable to us whether it comes as volunteer time, membership, sponsorship of events or sustaining financial gifts. As we move from fall into winter and transition from 2012 to 2013, please consider making a donation to your arts council. You are just the neighbor we want to connect with!

2013 Lincoln Arts Council Project Grants Announcement

2013 LAC Project Grants

The Lincoln Arts Council (LAC) is announcing that we will be accepting funding requests for Project Grants beginning on January 1, 2013. LAC Project Grants are available to 501(c)3 arts organizations who are members of the Lincoln Arts Council. Arts organizations will receive a mailing outlining LAC membership details in early January.  Qualifying arts organizations can request $500 in support for projects occurring between March 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.

The process for submitting requests has been simplified, with a proposal due date of February 1, 2013.

Funding for the LAC Project Grants is possible thanks to a generous gift from an endowment established by the estate of Kenneth J. Good. We offer our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Good for his generosity and vision for a future filled with beauty.

Additional funding was made possible thanks to the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce which donated the 4th of July signs to the Lincoln Arts Council for auction.  The September auction raised $1,118.50.

Artist in Residence: Carrie Strope at Clinton Elementary School

The Lincoln Arts Council's AmeriCorps member, Mollie Magnuson, is proud to announce the approval of funding, from the Nebraska Arts Council, for an Artists in Schools and Communities Residency Program Sponsor Grant.  The grant will support local glass artist, Carrie Strope, to do a 28 hour residency at Clinton Elementary School during the second week in December 2012.

This one week residency with Carrie Strope will take place at Clinton Elementary School starting on December 10, 2012.  Carrie will be introducing the basic history and process of glass fusing to 6 classes of students in grades K through 5. Each student will design and handcraft a 4"x4" glass square that will be put into a collaborative class quilt. The 6 class quilts will be hung in Clinton Elementary as a permanent installation.

"I am thrilled to join the team at Lincoln Arts Council and lend my administrative, promotion and networking strengths to the effort. Our lives are made rich by our interaction with creativity in all its forms. There is no finer way to gain insight to ourselves or to each other than through the expression of our highest and best selves when we are creating."

Creative Conversations

Creative Conversations

When we learned of the Americans For the Arts project "Creative Conversations" we thought it was a great idea. Why not invite the arts community to talk about its successes and challenges in a forum where we can listen-in and guide our advocacy? And why not informally link it to NET Radio's Friday Live From the Mill, where the arts community already gathers?

At the first two events in October it was clear that you agree that its a great idea. We started with 60-70 people for the first two "events," and have settled in with 12-15 people in a lively conversation most Fridays. Public art, Pershing Center, First Fridays, the intersection of science and art, the arts economic impact study, and many specific events are just a tiny fraction of the topics we've discussed. As you might imagine, there's a lot more to discuss. Since we're sure that YOU have much to contribute, please join us at the Haymarket Mill on Fridays from 8:30am to 10:00am and share your thoughts. Coffee and conversation with interesting, engaged people- what's not to love?

An Inspiring Night with Craftacular

Craftacular The third annual Craftacular at The Cornhusker Hotel on Wednesday, November 28 had yet another successful handmade holiday sale! Over 900 people from the Lincoln community experienced this delightful handmade market in which 50+ local artists were selling their handmade gifts.

A huge thank you to Jen Landis and Jackie Ostrowicki, founder and co-founder of Craftacular, for providing Lincoln with this unique handmade market and for allowing the Lincoln Arts Council to take a part in it! Last, but not least, we would like to thank the people from our community, who came out to support our local artists and especially to those who purchased raffle tickets, helping raise over $450 to which $100 will support continued arts education and programming for the Lincoln Arts Council.

Congratulations to Robin Klipper, Kim Cotton, and Shane Leisinger who were the lucky winners of the 3 raffle baskets!
