Best Practices from the Field
Should Your Next CEO Be An Insider?

A nonprofit board preparing to replace its CEO faces enormous opportunities-and great risks. Whether the succession is carefully planned and executed or involuntary (as is the case 30 percent of the time), the next hire can take the organization to even better places or cause it to founder.

Studies show that nearly half of current nonprofit CEOs came from within the organization they now lead. Insiders often bring great skills-a deep knowledge of the culture and an intuitive sense of the strategic challenges, for example. But they may also carry the baggage of unproductive traditions and limited perspective. And the organization itself may need very different skills than those offered by the internal candidate.

So, you may, or may not, already be nurturing your next great CEO. Let's take a look at some factors that can help you make this fraught decision have the best outcomes.
