Caregiver Corner:

National Family Caregivers Month serves as a reminder of the importance of caregivers taking care of themselves. It is important to pay attention to caregivers' well being too. Stress can wreak havoc on an otherwise healthy body, and if caregivers are not well, they won't be able to provide the best care for loved ones.

Many caregiver resources are available through AAA8. Call 1-800-331-2644 or stop by the AAA8 office located at 1400 Pike St. in Marietta.

Area Agency on Aging 8 Helps Expand Music and Memory Program Statewide

The therapeutic benefits of personalized music will now help nursing home residents across Ohio. Thanks to the launch of the program in the Area Agency on Aging 8 eight-county southeast Ohio region, the Ohio Dept. of Aging will now work to launch the program statewide.

Taking the lead as the first facilities in the state of Ohio to become certified-music-and-memory-nursing-homes, eight facilities developed
personalized digital music programs to help residents struggling from dementia and other chronic cognitive and physical impairments reconnect with family, friends and caregivers.

Developed as part of the region's Long-Term Care Ombudsman person-centered care approach, the Music and Memory program uses the proven use of music to help recover memories, stimulate recognition, and enhance quality of life. The approach includes the healing power of personalized music playlists to elder care residents with a wide range of cognitive and physical impairments.

Kim Flanigan "We couldn't think of a better way to personalize care than to provide residents with the music they know and love," said Kim Flanigan, Ombudsman Program Director for the Area Agency on Aging 8. "As we learned more about the national Music and Memory program, we just knew that we needed to have it in our area. This program is all about bringing joy into the lives of people suffering from a wide range of cognitive and physical impairments."

Kim Flanigan, AAA8 LTCOmbudsman Director will serve on the ODA Steering Committee to help guide the  statewide launch. Learn more at Music & Memory

Appalachian Ohio P-20 Council Launched

Buckeye Hills was pleased to be a sponsor of the Appalachian Ohio P-20 Launch in Sept. The next meeting of the AOP-20 is November 15 at 10 a.m. at the Zane State College Epic Center in Cambridge.

The initial region will be nine counties: Coshocton, Hocking, Morgan, Muskingum and Perry (served by Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center) and Guernsey, Monroe, Noble and Washington (served by Ohio Valley Educational Service Center.)

A P-20 council is established to convene a region's leaders representing early learning (the "P") through grade 12 and into college or doctoral and professional schools (the "20"). The goal of P-20 councils is to develop a seamless system of education with aligned expectations from the earliest years of a child's development, through the K-12 system, and into and through post-secondary education.
