"Direct" Traffic from SEO? Yes, Says Groupon

 

Upon pulling an "All Traffic" report from Google Analytics, many website owners will notice that one of the top sources of traffic, if not the top source of traffic, is listed as "(direct)/(none)". What exactly "(direct)/(none)" meant was always a little confusing since browsers don't always report referral sources for privacy reasons and these hidden sources can get lumped into the Direct category, but for the most part, taken at face value, Direct was believed to mean Direct.

According to (Not Provided) Count, "not provided" data in Google Analytics will hit 100% on December 16th, 2013. We've been watching not provided crawl from the originally reported and promised 10% to 40, 50, 60 and 70+% over the last few months. Recently, Google announced that they would be securing all searches, pushing "not provided" to 100%, much to the dismay and frustration of site owners and SEO professionals everywhere. Plenty of SEO experts have offered their advice on how to work around not provided and some of them have come up with really clever alternatives.

I'll admit that I am one of the many business owners out there who like to think that there are more than 24 hours in a day. I always hope I can get more done in a day than I really end up pushing through and unfortunately one of the easiest things to shuffle around to the back burner is social interactions. Despite what you may have heard, link building still has a place in an SEO campaign. The search spiders are still looking at a website's inbound links to determine the authority of a site which is a contributing factor to where that site appears within an organic search. It's only the low quality, mass produced inbound links that are going to hurt you. The good links are still going to help your SEO campaign and help your website perform well in the search engines. There's no need to give up on link building entirely, especially if you haven't done any link building in the past and are essentially starting out from scratch.
