June 2015

Sunshine and warmth. Long, leisurely days. Picnics and barbeques. Bike rides and wooded hikes. Locally-grown fruits and veggies. Live music at sunset. Just a few of the glorious things we love about June in Maine. We hope this finds you enjoying all those and more as we welcome back summer.

Sundays on the Boulevard
Summer's here...and that means "Sundays on the Boulevard" are back! Thanks to the efforts of Portland Trails, Back Cove is closed to vehicle traffic every Sunday from 9am-4pm. You and your family can ride bikes, skate, run, and walk along the Back Cove trail, have a picnic, and enjoy a car-free landscape.
Home is Where the Harvest Is
Interested in learning more about small scale homesteading, and growing, raising, and producing more of your food ? While homesteading has historically been considered an act of self reliance typical of rural areas with abundant land, small scale homesteaders in urban and suburban areas of Maine (and across the country) are finding that they can grow, raise, and produce food wherever they live. Click here to read the full feature article.
Safe Sunscreens 2015
Kids at Beach As you enjoy the sunny days ahead, make sure you're covered with one of the Environmental Working Group's safest sunscreens for 2015. The 2015 Sunscreen Guide rates the safety and efficacy of sunscreens, lotions, lip products and makeups that advertise sun protection. The ratings are based on chemicals, toxic ingredients, and their potential risk to human health. Want more info about how to practice "Smart Sun?" EWG has teamed up with several companies and concerned citizens to create the EWG Sun Safety Campaign - view their manifesto, find sun-safe products, and more.
Hike & Bike to Support the Maine you Love!
Hike & Bike logo MaineShare gives you an easy way to donate to over 40 statewide organizations working everyday to make Maine a better place to live. And this summer, you can help make Maine a better place to live just by going for a hike or a bike ride! The annual "Virtual Hike and Bike" event allows participants to choose their own hike, bike ride, or walk to raise money for MaineShare. It works like this: you collect pledges, go out and hike or bike on a day that is convenient, and send in your donations. The virtual format saves time, paper, and fuel while offering more flexibility for participants. With no expenses involved, every dollar goes to MaineShare organizations. Learn more about MaineShare and register for the Hike and Bike event  today.
