This Month's Expert Conversation
With Matt Chappell from Gather restaurant
Maine has been developing quite the reputation for its delicious and diverse culinary options, and we are fortunate to have great restaurants that serve locally-source, farm-fresh fare. Gather in Yarmouth is one of our faves. We caught up with the owner of Gather recently and chatted about the food and other offerings you'll find at this neighborhood restaurant. Read what Matt has to say in our full conversation with him.
SunriseGuide Mobile Edition Launch Parties!

To celebrate the launch of the SunriseGuide mobile edition, we are partnering with our friends at Little Tap House, Sebago Brewing Co., Vena's Fizz House and Frontier Caf & Cinema to host a series of "H-app-y Hour" events in February and March...and you're invited to them all! The events are free to attend and you can pick up the mobile edition at the events for just $10 (reg $14.95). There will be drink specials and four different "Winter Sunrise" signature cocktails (one at each event). And if that's not reason to attend them all, a portion of proceeds from drink and mobile app/book sales benefits four awesome environmental nonprofits. Tasty win-win!

The SunriseGuide "H-app-y Hour" events:

  • Tues. 2/17, 5-7pm: Benefiting Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) at Little Tap House in Portland
  • Tues. 2/24, 5-7pm: Benefiting Maine Audubon at Sebago Brewing Co. in Scarborough
  • Tues. 3/3, 5-7pm: Benefiting Portland Trails at Vena's Fizz House in Portland
  • Wed. 3/11, 5-7pm: Benefiting Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM) at Frontier in Brunswick
  •

To get the details about each event, keep an eye on our Facebook page and events calendar.

These events are part celebration and part education, as local farmers, fishermen and other food producers demonstrate how to enjoy local foods and support local businesses in a meaningful way. Each location will have plenty of local flavor, whether live local music, tastings featuring local foods, sales of food and other products from local farms and businesses, film screenings, raffle baskets and more. The CSA Fairs are held at various locations around Maine on February 27th through March 2nd -- visit MOFGA's website to find one near you!

A Little Love for your Skin

Cold temperatures and winter winds can do a number on our skin...and as the largest organ in our body, it's important to give it some TLC. But before you grab your lotion, give yourself a facial, or add some color to your cheeks, did you know there's a quick and easy way to find out what's in those products and how safe they are for your skin and overall health? The Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database has product safety information for nearly 80,000 body products and cosmetics, so you can find out how your products rank...and with the Skin Deep mobile app, you can even scan products at the store!

Want to learn more about which ingredients to look out for and how to find safe products? Check out our article "The truth about the cosmetics industry." And actually, one of the best skin care products might be found right in your kitchen. Learn how to make a skin scrub, moisturizer, face mask, and a ton of other things in our article about two dozen uses for coconut oil.
