Free Pesticide Disposal System
Mainers are urged to take advantage of a free opportunity to dispose of banned or unusable pesticides that they may have in their homes or elsewhere on their properties. This October, the Maine Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) will team up with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to dispose of banned pesticides or pesticides that have become caked, frozen, or otherwise rendered unusable. This free disposal program is open to homeowners, family-owned farms and greenhouses. To participate, you must register by September 27, 2013. Learn more. |
Healthy & Vegetarian Dining in Maine
Maine's unofficial state motto is "The Way Life Should Be," but perhaps it should be changed to "The Way Food Should Be." Thanks to a great selection of restaurants, cafés and markets that cater to conscious eaters, everyone in Maine can eat well. Read the full article from the 2013 Green & Healthy Maine visitor's guide, and learn about the many healthy and vegetarian restaurants from York County to the Downeast region. |
Markets and Faires for Local Makers
September is the month in Maine to showcase or peruse home-made "things;" whether edible, functional, inventive, or artistic. This month, there will be two Maker Faires happening in Maine. Maker Faires are gatherings of "curious people" who come together to share their do-it-yourself projects that "feature innovation and experimentation across the spectrum of science, engineering, art, performance, and crafts." There will be a Mini Maker Faire in Camden on September 7th and in Lewiston-Auburn on September 28th. And for local farmers, artists, crafters, and product-makers, every Wednesday night there is a "Makers Market" at 222 Anderson Street in Portland, featuring a variety of locally-made items. |
