Hike & Bike to Support the Maine You Love! Going for a hike or a bike ride this summer can help make Maine a better place to live. MaineShare's annual "Virtual Hike and Bike" event will take place now through Labor Day allowing participants to choose their own hike, bike ride, or walk to raise money for MaineShare. It works like any other event: you collect pledges, go out and hike or bike on a day that is convenient, and send in your donations. The virtual format saves time, paper, and precious fuel while offering more flexibility for participants. With no expenses involved every dollar goes to MaineShare, to support their work raising funds for 42 statewide groups working for the environment, safe food and water, and equal rights for all the people of Maine. Out of the Blue Sustainable Seafood Program
Five kinds of unfamiliar fish and seafood, all recommended by restaurant chefs, fishery scientists and a chorus of fishermen, are appearing on Maine menus in the summer. Atlantic Pollock, mackerel, Acadian redfish, whiting, and northern shrimp, caught off the coast in the Gulf of Maine and bordering fishing areas, are each in their own right magnificent and healthy meals. A campaign called Out of the Blue intends to put more of them on our plates. Learn more about how this program from the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) seeks to promote sustainably-harvested seafood from the Gulf of Maine. |

This Summer's Safest Sunscreens As you prepare for sunny days outside this summer, make sure you're covered with one of the Environmental Working Group's best sunscreens for 2013. They've just released their 2013 Sunscreen Guide rating the safety and efficacy of more than 1,400 sunscreens, lotions, lip products and makeups that advertise sun protection. The ratings are based on chemicals, toxic ingredients, and their potential risk to human health. To learn more and see which sunscreens are safest for you and your family, click here. |
