 May 2013
Greetings!

We've been busily working away on the Green & Healthy Maine Visitor's Guide, and all of the sudden we turned around and it was SPRING! The trees are budding, dandelions pepper new green grass, restaurant outdoor patios are starting to open, and it's light enough to exercise outside after work! We hope your spring is off to a great start, and you're enjoying this lovely season in Maine.

Gluten-Free Dining in Maine

Pillowy whoopie pies crammed with sweet cream frosting. Piping hot pizza with just the right balance of crisp and chew. Oversized loaves of fresh-baked bread still warm from the oven. Totally dreamy, or a gluten-free nightmare? Luckily, the vast array of gluten-free dining options in Maine now means that those with a gluten sensitivity or allergy can have their bread and eat it, too-without fear. Since May is National Celiac Awareness Month, we're happy to share this information about gluten-free dining in Maine.

World Fair Trade Day - May 11th

Purchasing fair trade goods and products ensures fair income to people from developing countries, promotes environmental sustainability, supports anti-slavery efforts and safe working conditions, and respects cultures and equal opportunities. World Fair Trade Day (WFTD) is an international celebration and promotion of Fair Trade, with events happening in over 80 countries. Celebrate WFTD here in Maine, with Karma Fair Trade in Portland, Full Circle in Kennebunk, and Mexicali Blues (various locations throughout Maine), to name a few! Learn more.

Maine Harvest for Hunger Program

When planting your garden this year, consider adding an extra row to donate to the local soup kitchen or food pantry. With 14.7% of Maine households and 23% of Maine children being "food insecure," the Maine Harvest for Hunger program seeks to provide those in need with fresh, locally-grown food. The program is open to all interested gardeners and is coordinated by the UMaine Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program. Learn more.
