Celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd!
Even though we believe every day is Earth Day, the holiday on April 22nd is an opportunity for us to come together, celebrate, learn and inspire each other to reduce our impact on the environment all year long. We're dedicated to helping our readers and supporters live more sustainable lives in order to protect our planet, and hope you feel inspired by these tips and suggestions to take new green steps this year. In addition to these ways of celebrating Earth Day in your home and personal life, there are several events happening throughout Maine for you and your family to enjoy. |
Earth Day Photo Scavenger Hunt!
We're happy to announce our Earth Day Scavenger Hunt! With this annual contest, you get to be an "Eco-Sleuth" and look for green items, like solar panels, community gardens, clotheslines, CFL lightbulbs and more! Here's how it works: Photograph examples of eco-items from our list that you find around your home and community, post your pictures to our Facebook page throughout April, and you could win a 4x4 raised cedar bed from Roots, Coops & More! The "Walking School Bus Initiative"
The Maine Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program is a statewide partnership between the Bicycle Coalition of Maine and the Maine Department of Transportation that promotes safe walking and bicycling routes for Maine's school children. Since the program began in 2005, they have worked with hundreds of Maine schools to create "walk & bike" activities and projects for students designed to increase outdoor activity, address childhood obesity, boost academic performance by increasing exercise, and decrease carbon emissions and air pollution. Learn more.
The "Walking School Bus Initiative" is a SRTS project that will be launching in two Portland schools this month, incorporating approximately 500 children. Students who live more than a mile from school will get off the bus to walk the final mile along a designated route with an adult volunteer. Read more about this new initiative.

The Portland Children's Film Festival, April 4-7
The 2nd Annual Portland Children's Film Festival is happening at various venues throughout the city from April 4-7. The Festival was created by parents and teachers from East End Community School, who wanted to bring community together, create and celebrate art, and provide people with a way to enjoy quality films that are appropriate for the whole family. Visit their website for more information and a full schedule of films. |
NRCM's Earth Day Challenge for Kid Artists
In celebration of Earth Day, the Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM) is once again inviting elementary school students to create original images of a pollution-free world. All artwork will be featured on the NRCM website and considered for use as the t-shirt image for NRCM's annual 5k and kids' "fun run." Additionally, the Maine school that has the most participating students will receive a $100 gift card for art supplies. Learn more. |
