From the United Methodist Women National Office:
A Prayer for Charleston
O, God, we come before you yet again seeking your mercy in the wake of another mass murder, this one compounded by racial hatred. This time in Charleston, South Carolina. We pray for the grieving families facing the unexpected, senseless and violent death of loved ones gunned down in church during a regular Wednesday night Bible study and prayer meeting. We pray for the Mother Emmanuel African Methodist Church family, which in one night lost faithful members and some of its core leadership team, including its pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney. We pray for the Charleston community, mourning even as it tries to understand how such a horror could happen in their city, on grounds they called "sacred." But more than that, God, we pray for our nation. Save us from our dependence on guns and the false security they offer. Heal us of racism and race-based fears that produce a multitude of sins and psychoses. Open our eyes so that we see the things that make for peace: justice and mercy and love. Open our ears so we can hear the voice of the Holy Spirit so willing to guide us to true safety, justice and peace and abundance for all. Give us the hearts to follow.

Theressa Hoover Community Service and Global Citizenship Award
Calling all women who want to travel and study! United Methodist Women is relaunching the Theressa Hoover Community Service and Global Citizenship Award, and we are accepting applications now. The grant is awarded to a woman who wishes to travel in order to explore and study one of our four priority issues. The proposed project must take place in a region other than the applicants' own. The emphasis on travel and field work is in recognition of Theressa Hoover's strong belief in this way of learning, and it honors her legacy of global citizenship.
Below are our 2016-2020 priority issues, one of which must be studied to be eligible for the award:
In addition, applicants should demonstrate concern for and a connection to their community, as well as a recognition of their global responsibilities.
Applicants must be laywomen between 21 and 35, and applications are due by November 2, 2015. United Methodist Women's directors will approve grants at their annual board meeting in the fall.
Please visit our Hoover Award page for more information and the application.
Theressa Hoover
Originally from Arkansas, Theressa Hoover joined the Woman's Division of Christian Service as a field worker in 1948. In 1968 she was elected chief executive of the Women's Division of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. She was the first African-American woman to hold that position or any comparable post in the denomination. She served as head of the division for 22 years, and retired in 1990. Ms. Hoover died on December 21, 2013, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at 88.
Theressa Hoover leaves behind a legacy: In 2004, Ebony magazine named her one of the 100 most influential African-American women, and the Theressa Hoover United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, was named for her. In 1990, United Methodist Women created the Theressa Hoover Community Service and Global Citizenship Award. We are grateful to be able to continue Ms. Hoover's passionate work for women and children by passing on the torch of global citizenship with this award.
