A Mother's Day Prayer
From the May 2015 issue of RESPONSE

Loving God, we know your love because we have mothers.

We thank you for the mothers who carried us in their wombs,
nourishing, protecting and bringing us into the world.

We thank you for the mothers who did not give birth to us, yet
loved us just the same.

With gratitude we remember their words of encouragement when
we have felt unsure or afraid;

we thank you for their kindness when the world has treated us
unkindly;

we thank you for their soft, comforting arms and the gentle way
they kissed away our tears;

we thank you that they protected us with the fierceness of a
lioness protecting her cubs;

we thank you for the times when they corrected us rather than
letting us continue down wrong paths.

Help us to live so that their investment in us might not be in vain.

We honor our mothers with lives of service to you in the name of
the Risen Christ, for it is in his Name we pray. Amen.

Methodist History: The Founding Mothers of Mother's Day

In the late 1860s, before there was an official Mother's Day holiday in the U.S., a Methodist mom organized "Mothers' Friendship Day," at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation.

Harriett Olson, the General Secretary and CEO of United Methodist Women, and Donna Miller, archivist at Historic St. George's United Methodist Church, tell us more about the women behind the holiday.
Campaign to End Family Detention

In 2014, thousands of children, alone or with families, crossed the U.S./Mexico border seeking safety in the United States. They fled extreme violence and poverty in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. They faced abuse and violence as they crossed Mexico. In the United States the migration gained national attention and became politicized by electoral politics. In response to the increased numbers of immigrants crossing the border, the U.S. government stepped up the enforcement of immigration laws, detention and deportation.

United Methodists responded with an outpouring of love, care and support. These immigrant children and families are indeed the faces of Jesus Christ in our midst. Jesus said, "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me," (Matthew 25:40) and United Methodists are living out that call, serving as the hands and feet of Jesus. The Book of Resolutions of The United Methodist Church, 2012 states, "We are urged by God through Christ to love our neighbor and to do what we must to bring healing in the midst of pain, and to restore to wholeness those whose lives are shattered by injustice and oppression." United Methodist Women National Office invites you to learn more about this situation and join the Campaign to End Family Detention. Violating both national and international law, the detention of families criminalizes women and children who should have refugee status or a temporary protected status due to the dangers in their home countries; and it exposes them to fear, isolation, further hardship and abuse. The detention centers must be closed, not expanded. Learn more, and take action!

Mother and Child Health Stories: Take Action for Mother and Child Health! Be Inspired, Share Your Story
Each year, 300,000 women die globally during pregnancy or in childbirth. Yet 90 percent of these deaths could be prevented if women had access to low-cost interventions, some costing less than $5.00. ... Global efforts are being made to reach the Millennium Development Goal 5 and reduce such deaths by three quarters by 2015. But many countries are not making substantial progress toward this target. Can United Methodist Women lead efforts to improve maternal health? If women do not lead the campaign to help other women, who will?
