Forty Days of Racial Justice

Each week this Lent, the United Methodist Women website will provide resources to help us look at the theological and biblical foundations for working to achieve racial justice. Each week we will be invited to consider how we can intentionally be involved in working towards racial justice in our church, our community and our world. Each week we will explore individual and collective responses to racial injustice and what role we might play in ending systemic racism in our church and society.

The first resource is for Ash Wednesday, and is written by Janis Rosheuvel and Julie Taylor from our National Office staff.  It begins with a beautiful prayer:

Pray

God of quiet and wonder,
God of the shallow, babbling brook and the deep, wavy ocean,
God of soft snow falling and hard, driving rain,
God of flowing tears and hearty laughter,
God of strong handshakes and soft eyes,
God of colored, falling leaves and sprouting green shoots,
God of life and seasons,
God of wilderness days and baptism rivers,
God of fasting and feasting,
God of prayer and contemplation,
God of Scripture and tradition,

We come to Ash Wednesday at the beginning of this Christian season of Lent.

Open our hearts to you as the Bringer of New Growth.

Open our minds to you as the great Creator of the Universe.

Open our hands to you as the great Designer of Nature.

Open our souls to you as the Embodiment of Love.

May we receive the ashes of remembrance and wear them as a sign of your great love for us and our commitment to let your Spirit of radical welcome live itself out through us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Call to Prayer & Self Denial
A Gesture of Gratitude

A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial  is an annual observance during which members reflect on the gospel of Christ and make an offering to mission in response to Christ's love and his people. In 2015, the offering received will go toward the pensions and health care of retired deaconesses and missionaries. One hundred percent of the offering will go directly to provide health and pension support for retirees.

Get Call to Prayer resources for your local unit, and share in this important offering:  Offering Information Letter / Resource Order Form / Prayer Card

And, the 2015 Call to Prayer & Self Denial program was written by Mary Longstreth and Rev. Donald Turman, both residents at Brooks-Howell Home in Asheville, NC.

2015 WNCC United Methodist Women Seminar Trip - Immigration
United Methodist Women have been concerned with immigration rights for nearly 150 years. From Ellis Island to San Francisco, from sweatshops to detention centers, our purpose and mission have compelled us to be in ministry to women, children, and youth both locally and globally. We continue that work today by learning about the challenges that immigrants face as they leave their homes searching for better lives.

In early May 2015 a small group of 20-25 United Methodist Women from our conference will have an opportunity to travel to Washington DC for a seminar study on immigration reform. We will learn about complex, often polarizing issues and seek to build bridges that will reach out to newcomers in our communities while advocating for justice and dignity under the laws of our land.

Lodging will be at the Washington Seminar Center, within walking distance of the General Board of Church and Society, where our seminar will be held.

Please prayerfully consider who among your units and districts may have a passion for this type of ministry. Encourage women of all ages to apply who will be willing to come home ready to share and go to work on behalf of this vulnerable population. Wherever possible, offer to underwrite part of their cost for this exciting and meaningful opportunity.

Celebrating United Methodist Women!
United Methodist Women
Celebrating 150 Years: 1869-2019
On March 23, 1869, six women gathered at Tremont Methodist Episcopal Church in Boston, Massachusetts, and organized the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society, what would become United Methodist Women. The women raised money to send a doctor, Clara Swain, and a teacher, Isabella Thoburn, to India as missionaries to serve the women of that nation.

Celebrate the dedication and foresight of our foremothers in mission as we lead up to our 150th anniversary in 2019 with our very first special Day of Giving, March 23, 2015.

We have added a Legacy Fund / 150th Anniversary page to our website...where we will continue to add and share information as we move toward our 150th anniversary in 2019...check it out!
