Call to Prayer & Self Denial
A Gesture of Gratitude

A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial  is an annual observance during which members reflect on the gospel of Christ and make an offering to mission in response to Christ's love and his people. In 2015, the offering received will go toward the pensions and health care of retired deaconesses and missionaries. One hundred percent of the offering will go directly to provide health and pension support for retirees.

And, the 2015 Call to Prayer & Self Denial program was written by Mary Longstreth and Rev. Donald Turman, both residents at Brooks-Howell Home in Asheville, NC.

February is Black History Month

February is Black History Month - a time to reflect on the history of black Americans and to honor the individuals and groups who have worked tirelessly toward racial justice.

As outlined in the Racial Justice Charter, United Methodist Women works to eliminate all forms of institutional racism; to study, understand and appreciate the historical and cultural contributions of each race to the church and community; to support and participate in the worldwide struggle for liberation in the church and community, and much more.

Throughout this month, United Methodist Women will continue to bring you resources and stories for Black History Month. Visit the United Methodist Women website.

2015 WNCC United Methodist Women Seminar Trip - Immigration
United Methodist Women have been concerned with immigration rights for nearly 150 years. From Ellis Island to San Francisco, from sweatshops to detention centers, our purpose and mission have compelled us to be in ministry to women, children, and youth both locally and globally. We continue that work today by learning about the challenges that immigrants face as they leave their homes searching for better lives.

In early May 2015 a small group of 20-25 United Methodist Women from our conference will have an opportunity to travel to Washington DC for a seminar study on immigration reform. We will learn about complex, often polarizing issues and seek to build bridges that will reach out to newcomers in our communities while advocating for justice and dignity under the laws of our land.

Lodging will be at the Washington Seminar Center, within walking distance of the General Board of Church and Society, where our seminar will be held.

Please prayerfully consider who among your units and districts may have a passion for this type of ministry. Encourage women of all ages to apply who will be willing to come home ready to share and go to work on behalf of this vulnerable population. Wherever possible, offer to underwrite part of their cost for this exciting and meaningful opportunity.
