Senior Director
Jason Griffiths & CE Investing In USSF "B" Coaching License

"B" is for BIG.  It takes a big investment of time, intellect, money and determination to get the B license.  We asked Jason some questions about the license and the process of earning it.

CE: Tell us about the process and schedule for taking the B license course.
Jason: The B course is held over a period of 5 months. The first meeting was August 9-14, the second meeting is October 11-16, and the final meeting is December 9-11. The first two meetings are composed of field sessions and lecture sessions, and the final meeting will consist of field assessments. The periods in between the three meetings are called the 'Development Periods' and you should put into practice what you have learned while at the course.  In order to take the B course you must meet the following requirements:
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Have held a U.S. Soccer C license for at least 12 months
  • Have 3 or more years of coaching experience
  • Currently coaching
There is a formal application and acceptance process, and only two courses were offered this year.  I feel privileged to have been accepted into the course.

CE:  What is the purpose of the B license course?
Jason: The purpose of the B course is to focus on the principles of long-term player development and developing a team. During the development periods we are required to complete ten assignments that consist of the following;
  • Leading the individual player
  • Leading the team
  • Personal development program
  • Role modeling
  • Game analysis
  • Coaching a game
  • Periodization plans
  • Coaching a training session
  • Team group dynamics
  • Player interview - goal setting
The B course looks to develop a well rounded coach equipped to deal with both the individual player and the team at a high level.

CE: What has been your most important takeaway from the course so far?
Jason: The most important thing I have taken away from the course so far, as it relates to my current coaching role, is to lead the individual player. Club soccer is all about preparing the individual player to develop and progress to bigger and better things (high school, college, professional). None of our club players have the same beginning or end in soccer, each player is unique and will take a different path. Our job is to develop them and give them the tools to take the path they choose. I feel like we are on the right track at Classics Eagles, as this philosophy of 'Player First Development' trumps results 100% of the time in the club setting.

I'm sure there are others at CE that run cross country, but these are the seven of sixteen players
on the team that I coach (CE U14 Boys Gold) that run cross country (XC) for their middle schools.  They typically go to XC practice after school, and run a couple of miles, sometimes more, and then they come to soccer practice and work just as hard.  It's pretty impressive.

The XC kids have seemingly endless energy, which really shows up in a tournament weekend. From what I have seen, middle school XC coaches are very understanding about soccer conflicts, and if they miss a soccer practice here and there for XC, I never need to worry about them keeping up with with fitness. At the end of spring season, the soccer kids can jump right into XC and have a head start on the other runners because they are already fit from soccer.   I'm sure somewhere down the road the boys will have to choose between the two sports, but for now I think it's awesome that that they can do both.

Common Overuse Injuries: Sever's Disease

As the fall soccer season begins to ramp up, it is not uncommon for athletes of all ages to be hit with a dreaded overuse injury.  Some common overuse injuries such as tendonitis or shin splints can be more easily managed and in many cases, athletes can remain on the field during treatment. However, other overuse injuries are not as quick to resolve and can recur during the adolescent growth periods.

One such overuse injury commonly seen in in adolescents is heel pain related to Sever's Disease. This injury is associated with stress and tension placed on the area of the heel bone where the muscles of the arch (plantar fascia) and the Achilles tendon attach to the bone. This typically occurs in 9-13 year olds who are active in sports that require a lot of running, such as soccer.

If your athlete starts to exhibit heel pain, click HERE to review this article from The American Academy of Pediatrics, which delves into the condition in detail and provides tips to help parents and coaches recognize the symptoms and learn treatment strategies.  This injury usually requires evaluation by a physician to ensure appropriate diagnosis and effective treatment. If you suspect your athlete is showing these sign, Orthopedic ONE's athletic trainers can help determine if a physician consult is required, as well as provide more detailed home treatment strategies.
