Classics Eagles Premier & College ID Camp Is Coming July 18-21.....y Glen Tourville, Senior Director

The Classics Eagles 2nd Annual Premier & College ID Camp will be held July 18-21 at Liberty Park, and is included in the annual programming for all CE Premier Players. The event name begins with Premier Camp because it is part of our programming for players on the CE Premier Teams. College ID Camp refers to the opportunity for college coaches to work with high school age players while off of their campus.  An ID camp must be open to any high school age player who wishes to register and this portion of the camp cannot be exclusive to CE players.  That is a bit about the origin of the name. However, why do we offer the camp and why should your player participate?

As a college coach for twenty-five years, I worked at several of these types of camps in Texas, Illinois, Canada, and that state up North.  For the club players it is an awesome opportunity for them to hear the same message, but from a different voice. For the younger club players, it is great for them to be coached by coaches who know what a player needs to look like in the next ten years, and focus on pure development.

The positive outcome for the high school age players is the building of an individual relationship with a college coach. This can be an important part of the recruiting process for the player, the coach and for the school. The coaching fraternity is small, and we all talk to each other. A player might not be the right fit for a certain school, but the coaches, through their networks, can pass along information to other coaches, and connect the player and another school in the future.

As with all of our programming, the sessions in the camp will have a purpose and continue to build on the Target Competencies that we provide for our players annually. Each session has a technical (soccer skill emphasis) combined with the attacking and defending concepts that players need to evolve their Soccer IQ.  The sessions will include:

Day 1
  • Technique: Dribbling - with purpose to beat or get behind an opponent, to create scoring chances, to escape pressure.
  • Attacking Concepts: Penetration and Support.
  • Defensive Concepts: Pressure and Delay.
Day 2 & Day 3
  • Technique:  Passing and receiving (multiple surfaces), proper weight of passes, clean first touch, body position.
  • Attacking Concepts: Possession v Penetration (eliminating opponents), width and support.
  • Defensive Concepts: Pressure, Delay, Cover and Balance.
Day 4
  • Technique:  Finishing Games (multiple surfaces), passing and placing ball in goal, balance and proper mechanics.
  • Attacking Concepts: Build up, scoring, movement off the ball, combination play.
  • Defensive Concepts: Pressure, tackles, shot blocking, compactness.
This year we have head and assistant coaches representing schools from NCAA Division I, II and III, in addition to NAIA and Community College coaches. Click HERE for all of the details including the list of college coaches who will be participating.
How to Excel in Your Sport...Thoughts from THE SCORE TAKES CARE OF ITSELF: My Philosophy of Leadership by Bill Walsh with Steve Jamison and Craig Walsh, with comments from Glen Tourville

There is no secret to becoming your best.  Certainly you have heard or read something similar to this before. There are plenty of YouTube examples of Steph Curry developing his basketball excellence.

How You Excel: No Mystery to Mastery
If you're Jerry Rice, the greatest receiver in NFL history and, according to some, the greatest NFL player ever, you're practicing a slant pass pattern at 6:00 AM over and over with no one within a mile of you - no football, no quarterback, nobody but Jerry working to improve, to master his profession.

Why did the NFL's greatest ever receiver do this? Jerry Rice understood the connection between preparation and performance; between intelligently applied hard work and results; between mediocrity and mastery of your job. And Jerry had the skill coupled with the will to do it (the key). And Google where Jerry Rice went to college...another myth that you have to be at a certain level to achieve greatness (it was Mississipi Valley State University).

Joe Montana, one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, in his last season as a professional when he was playing for Kansas City, would spend two hours a day every day at the same little practice field at Menlo College near San Francisco. I would work with him on basic fundamentals that would bore a high a schooler to death. Joe had four Super Bowl rings. How did he get them? Why was he on that little practice field? Joe understood what mastery meant.

You never stop learning, perfecting, refining - molding your skills. You never stop depending on the fundamentals - sustaining, maintaining, and improving (if you are taking the summer off you will never achieve excellence). Jerry and Joe, maybe the best ever at their positions, at the last stages of their careers were still working very hard on the fundamental things that high school kids won't do because it's too dull. (The skills of their football might be different, but the work and process to excellence is the same. It begins and ends with you!)

It wasn't dull to Jerry and Joe, because they understood the absolute and direct connection between intelligently directed hard work and achieving your potential. We all do; you do; I do. Everybody who's a serious player knows what it takes. The difference is how much you're willing to give to get there.

For us, there is no mystery to mastery. And it applies to football players and coaches, general managers and executives in sports or business. It applies to anyone, anywhere who wants to get really good - who wants to master his or her profession. It applies to you.

In addition, the correct mindset in competition is vital. There is too much information available to you.  Too many non-athletes who are not in the arena that share opinions and tell you what you can and cannot be accomplished as a team. They are ranked #1; you cannot beat a certain team. There are certain odds that you cannot overcome etc. Well again, the only truth is what you believe is possible, and the effort you put into that belief. Just look at Leicester City winning the EPL in 2016, or the Cleveland Cavaliers coming back from down three games to one to win the NBA Championship!

Heat Injury/Illness Prevention

As we end enter the peak of sweltering summer heat and athletes begin preparing for their upcoming sport seasons with conditioning and training, it is vital to educate all parents, coaches, and athletes about the signs and symptoms of heat injury and illness.  The National Athletic Trainers' Association webpage states, "According to the CDC, heat illness during practice or competition is the leading cause of death among U.S. high school athletes.  Summer's high temperatures put patients at increased risk for heat illness. There are several types of heat illness ranging in severity. Although heat illness can be fatal, death is preventable if quickly recognized and properly treated."

Click HERE for information on hydration recommendations to "beat the heat", and HERE for warning signs ranging from minor heat illness to signs of heat stroke, safety tips, and guidelines for coaches and parents to utilize to help prevent and if necessary treat cases of heat illness. Please take a moment to review this information, and share with your team, athlete, and child to ensure that their summer training sessions are both and safe and successful!
