Welcome To
"The Back of the Net"
Classics Eagles e-Newsletter Volume 3, Issue 9 (3/31/16)

Dear Classics Eagles Families:

Could we call this time of the soccer year, April-early June, the craziest time of the year?  Training sessions, league games, schedule changes because of rain, tournaments, State Cup, schedule changes because of schedule changes, ODP, thinking about tryouts, getting ready for tryouts, going through tryouts, all in the midst of very busy school and family schedules, not to mention special events related to other activities that must be attended!

For many of you, we say welcome back from Spring Break, and welcome to a crazy next couple of months!  With this in mind, we are going to keep this edition of The Back of the Net simple and short, and hopefully helpful to parents and players.

A Simple Question.......by Jeff Dybdahl

It is a simple question.  But it can help calm storms, can bring clarity in confusion, and help you get what you want and help your player get what your player wants.  And that gets to the question, what do you want?  It is a question for us as parents to ask ourselves, and it is a question to ask our players.

Before getting to the scenarios of when to ask our player this simple question, it is vital that we ask the question with such a spirit that our players know we are asking because we care.

Here are some situations and simple questions to ask our players:

  1. To help our players think about what they want in the big picture of soccer.  What do you want to accomplish in soccer? Do you want to play in high school?  College? Professional? Do you want to play for fun as an adult?  Do you want to be a coach?  Do you want to be a referee?
  2. To help our players clarify what they want for an upcoming year or season. What part of your game do you want to grow in this season?  What do you want to do to get better this year?
  3. OCCASIONALLY, to help our player focus on development, before a game or training session. What do you want to work on in the game or training session today?
  4. To help our players when injured and in the process of recovery from injury. What do you want me to do for you? What do you want to happen?  What do you want to do to recover from this?
  5. When our player is having trouble with teammates.   What do you want from your teammate(s)?  What do you want to be like with your teammates?
  6. When our player feels failure.   What do you want right now?  (Can be asked in the immediate time frame, like after a game and in private)  Then later, after there is emotional recovery from the experience, IF it seems appropriate as a tool to help with growth; What do you want to do differently next time?
  7. Whenever there is emotional turmoil, things seems to be spiraling down, interrupt the flow with the calm question, what do you want?

Here are some situations and simple questions to ask ourselves:
  1. When we consider the big picture of how we want to help our player with soccer.  What do I want to do to help my player have fun, enjoy this year in soccer, and grow as a soccer player?
  2. When we consider the big picture of our player's experience and memory of the youth soccer experience.  What do I want my child to remember about me as my child remembers the youth soccer experience?
  3. When we are feeling frustrated about our child's performance, effort or attitude.  What do I want my child to hear from me right now?
  4. When we are feeling conflict with the coach, upset at a referee's call, anger at other parents.  What do I want to be like as a person in this situation?
  5. When we recognize how special our child is, flaws and all, and what a joy it is to be the parent of this child.  What do I want that is better than this?
