U District Street Medicine
Support UDSM by donating outreach supplies!

University District Street Medicine (UDSM) is an innovative project at the University of Washington that aims at providing low-income and homeless individuals in the U District with access to medical and social services within an interdisciplinary model. By engaging with individuals on-the-ground, students will begin establishing rapport and continue to assess community needs. UDSM also provides education on communication with health providers and available resources and teach students to empower patients on increasing advocacy and communication with healthcare and social service providers.

UDSM is in its sixth week of community outreach. It has partnered with Elizabeth Gregory Day Home and St. Vincent de Paul at Blessed Sacrament and has conducted outreach at both sites as well as conducted street outreach throughout the University District.

UDSM is a student run program that includes students from Medicine, Social Work, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Law. They are currently looking for interested students and active and retired clinicians from all of the participating schools. They are also seeking donations for outreach supplies, additional partnerships and community support in the form of fundraisers.

If you are interested in supporting University District Street Medicine, please contact Krystal Koop or Ensoo Choi.

Some outreach supplies include:
1. Socks
2. Men's and women's underwear
3. Reusable water bottles
4. First aid supplies such as bandages, gauze, etc.
5. Non-perishable, pre-packaged food such as granola bars
U District Farmers Market Featured on Rachael Ray!
Feature aired June 2015

We all know and love the U District Farmers Market, open every single Saturday, rain or shine, 9am-2pm and we are so proud that it was featured on The Rachael Ray Show in June! Below is an excerpt from the interview with Chris Curtis, Executive Dir. of Neighborhood Farmers Markets in Seattle:

"It's the oldest in our network of markets and it's also the largest. It has the largest number of farmers participating every week, and certainly some of the biggest variety of farm produce and farm products. It has a national reputation and is often singled out as one of the top ten farmers markets in the country, so we're very proud of that. This time of year, we see about 5,000 shoppers per week." - Read the full article here!

Here is what's new at the Farmers Market:
  • Cherries - Index, Chelan, Sonata, Rainier, Bing... $4.99/lb. from multiple farmers (all markets).
  • Rival Apricots and PF 1 Peaches - Pipitone Farms (UD, WS).
  • Peaches - Early harvests of Red Haven and Sugartime
  • Pears - Season's first varieties have arrived!
  • Cherry Tomatoes - Field-ripened and getting sweeter by the day!
  • Summer Baby Squash and Squash Blossoms

Picnic at the North Precinct is Coming Up!
This year's Picnic at the North Precinct will take place at Ballard Seafood Fest on Saturday, July 11th

"Picnic at the Precinct" is a project designed by the Seattle Police Foundation (SPF) to facilitate positive community and police interactions across the city. Picnics in the Precincts provide an opportunity for each precinct's surrounding neighborhoods to come together and enjoy an afternoon of celebration with the officers that protect their families and businesses. Thousands of Seattle residents enjoy food, music, and an opportunity to learn about and interact with many of the SPD's specialty units including K-9, Mounted Patrol, Bomb Squad, and SWAT.

Businesses financially support the event through donations and community groups assist in the planning and execution of each picnic.

We hope you will join us for this fun event on Saturday, July 11th at Ballard Seafood Fest!

Give Your Feedback on Proposed Parking Management Strategy for Roosevelt Way NE
Send in your thoughts by July 13th!
As a result of the new Roosevelt Way NE corridor design, including transit, bicycle and pedestrian improvements, there will be a reduction in on-street parking. To address parking demand, SDOT is proposing a parking management strategy to better provide parking availability and meet the needs of the community. Check out the details on their website and then take the survey (which can also be found on the website) by July 13th!
The U District's Final Environmental Impact Statement has been Approved
The UDP's Urban Design committee works hard to create an environment that encourages growth, activity, and diversity.

On June 19th the UDP received the City of Seattle's Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the University District, which has been approved by the Deputy Hearing Examiner. The goal of the FEIS is to create a great setting for a diversity of people and activities through design and development standards, zoning, coordination with transit agencies, advocacy and incentives, as well as public and private investment.

Congratulations to the U District Food Bank on their New Facility!
The groundbreaking ceremony for University Commons took place June 16th

The University District Food Bank, which serves more than 1,100 families each week out of an 800 square foot church basement, broke ground on its new 6,000 square foot, environmentally friendly facility in the University District on Tuesday, June 16 at 3:30 p.m.! The ceremony was held at the new site just north of the corner of 50th and Roosevelt Way, at 5019 Roosevelt Way NE. Elected officials, food bank partners Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) and YouthCare, and proud community members were present to commemorate this special occasion for the new University Commons facility.

Check out King 5's coverage of the event here!

About University Commons:

LIHI is overseeing the construction, and will own and operate 48 units of low income housing above the food bank, 16 of which will be managed by YouthCare and reserved for young adults. All residents are expected to use the food bank. YouthCare will run its successful barista training program for at-risk youth, and partner with the food bank for job and life skills training programs. The food bank will be located on the ground floor with indoor waiting area (currently customers have to wait outside) and full ADA accessibility.

Completion and move-in are planned for summer 2016. For updated capital campaign and groundbreaking information visit the University District Food Bank website and Facebook.

Wishing a warm congratulations to the U District Food Bank on this wonderful occasion. It is an integral part of our community and we know its programming will only continue to impress us.

U District Parklet Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Recap
Parklet ribbon-cutting ceremony took place 6/29
On Monday, July 29th, Mayor Murray and many other supporters gathered in celebration for the U District parklet's ribbon cutting ceremony! This successful project leveraged the support of many community members and neighbors to raise the funds, design, build and now enjoy the neighborhood's first parklet at the intersection of NE 43rd Street and the 'Ave', in the heart of the U District.

The parklet was assembled overnight and soft-launched just in time for this year's U District Street Fair in May, the finishing touches set in place for Monday's official launch and celebration. The Parklet was a volunteer & community-funded project pooling funds from a very successful Kickstarter campaign, a Department of Neighborhoods grant, and sponsors such as Urban Sparks and Hagen-Dazs.
