We've Moved to the Business Resource & Innovation Center (BRIC)!
In February 2016, the Regional Foundation Center moved to the BRIC, a new department created to serve Philadelphia's small business and nonprofit community. The BRIC is part of the Building Inspiration: 21st Century Library Initiativea transformational program and an innovative model for the future of library service.

Our new space continues to offer access to the RFC's online and print resources, helpful librarians, and programming.   We are also happy to offer expanded hours, a meeting space one can reserve, and the opportunity to collaborate with the small business  and entrepreneur community.

Come visit us in our new space on the 2nd floor of the Parkway Central Library.

Each month the Inform newsletter will feature a local funder, nonprofit, or service provider who will highlight their organization's services and how they support the social sector.

This month we are excited to feature the PHILO Project led by Gerald Kolpan.

How do you support the nonprofit community?
The PHILO Project supports Philadelphia regional small nonprofits by producing the kind of professional videos those organizations could otherwise never afford. Everything we do is professionally shot, lit, written, and produced to show the client in the best possible light. Best of all, our services are free to the 20-odd organizations we choose each year.

What is your role?
Because PHILO is less than four years old, like our clients, we run on a shoestring; it's essentially a one-man operation with help from CultureTrust of which I'm a proud member. I shoot, write, edit and produce all of our videos as well as solicit funders to keep us going. It's tough sometimes, but I love it.

What does your organization do best?

More than anything else, we pride ourselves on our storytelling. Part of the reason PHILO was created was to save our clients from people who could maybe shoot video but were incapable of really explaining the organization's mission. In all of our videos, our clients tell their stories themselves. There are no pompous voiceovers and no scripted interviews. Through the judicious choice of the client's sound, plus innovative use of graphics and music, we produce work we believe is unique; and every piece is as short and entertaining as we can make it.

Are there any future programs or plans you would like to highlight?
We plan to be more aggressive in pursuing funders who will partner with us and provide the resources needed to create video for organizations they designate. For instance, The Burkett-Plack Foundation has funded a series of videos for the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in New Jersey, and right now, we're working on two videos sponsored by The Montgomery County Foundation.

What's the biggest mistake you see nonprofits make?
Most of them move too slowly. At PHILO, everything is fast! Our applicants get their acceptances or rejections in less than 5 weeks and no client has ever waited more than two months from shooting for their finished video. My other gripe is that some funders seem to have a singular lack of imagination when in comes to what they'll support.

What's the best advice you have received?
Back about 35 years ago when I was a young graphic designer, I completely messed up an assignment for a client named Pat Ducci. He was disappointed, but he didn't yell at me. He just said, "you know, when someone gives you a job to do, they have to be able to think, 'Gerald's in charge. I have nothing to worry about.'" It was a bitter lesson to learn, but from that moment, I've tried to be the guy that Pat described.

This fall the Regional Foundation Center will offer an information session for organizations interested in working with the PHILO Project. Stay tuned for details!
