Dear Friends:
Summer is officially here, which means plenty of sunshine, BBQs and trips to the beach. It's also a time for the new Council to plan for the future and develop programs for the upcoming year.
The future looks bright.
For those of you who are already wondering about the High Holidays, Rabbi Julie Greenberg and Cantorial Candidate Jessi Roemer will be leading a spirited series of High Holiday services and events.
As we plan for next year, we welcome new ideas and new ways to meet our challenges. So we ask that you continue your support. Moving forward in a new direction is challenging in that it requires both a personal commitment to programs as well as a financial commitment. We want to keep the warm and welcoming feeling that is so special to our little shul. Yet we want to reach out to all who are interested in exploring their Judaism and find a way to connect it to their lives.
Please consider pledging over and above your regular dues level to help make our little synagogue continue for many years to come. If you are not already a member, please consider joining.
Do you want to join a committee or do you have more questions about our future direction? Contact me at info@leyvhair.org. Your help is always appreciated.

One Book, One Congregation
| | Sunday, August 28th, 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Penn Center House Leisure Lounge
Welcome Rabbi Julie Greenberg back from her summer break! Enjoy a delicious brunch and a rabbi-led exploration of new ideas and solutions.
This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate by Naomi Klein is a brilliant explanation of why the climate crisis challenges us to abandon the core "free market" ideology of our time, restructure the global economy, and remake our political systems.
In short, either we embrace radical change ourselves or radical changes will be visited upon our physical world. The status quo is no longer an option.
The cost to attend is $10.00 for members and $15.00 for guests. Make your reservation now by email (info@leyvhair.org) or phone (215-629-1995). Reservations must be received by Thursday, August 25, 2016.

Rabbi Jeff Thank You
| |
Thank you to Congregation Leyv Ha-Ir ~ Heart of the City for helping to make this happen.
Last year, you were kind enough to make a donation in my honor when I received the Keter Shem Tov (Crown of a Good Name) award from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and the Jewish Reconstructionist Communities. Thanks to you and more than 215 other households, our Summer 2016 campers are swimming in their new pool. Once again, I am so humbled by your meaningful gift in my honor and our campers and staff of Camp JRF thank you too.

Remembering Paul Jaffe
| |
Paul Jaffe, 88, a member of Congregation Leyv Ha-Ir, a corporate and real estate lawyer who served as a Philadelphia Common Pleas Court judge for two years in the 1990s, passed away on July 22 at home.
Much of his work entailed representing the operators of parking lots. He became so knowledgeable about legal matters involving parking that in 1991 then-Mayor Ed Rendell appointed him vice chairman of the Philadelphia Parking Authority.
In that role, Judge Jaffe tackled issues such as upgrading parking meters to allow payment by credit card; special parking arrangements for Wednesday night shoppers, since abandoned; and privatizing some of the authority's lots to increase efficiency.
He remained on the parking board until 1996, when he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Common Pleas Court. He heard civil and criminal cases until 1998 and then returned to practicing law.
He was a devoted civic volunteer, serving on the board of the American Jewish Committee from 1990 until the time of his death. He also was a board member and president of Moss Rehabilitation Hospital and a board member of Jefferson Health System.
