JUNE 2015

Dear Members and Friends of Leyv Ha-Ir,

This June newsletter is arriving in your mailbox just before the Leyv Ha-Ir annual meeting on Sunday, May 31. Your Executive Committee and Council have been working hard on assessing the present status of Leyv Ha-Ir and how to go forward.  Several of us are stepping down and new fresh faces will give new input and direction.

Changing of the guard and transitioning is always exciting, thought provoking although there may be some ripples.

We ask our members and larger community to be supportive, flexible and giving at this time.  As we just learned again at Shavuot: we are "all in."

Yasher koach to those stepping forward to be our new Executive Committee and our well-wishes!

Bobbi and Roby

RABBI'S MESSAGE
June 2015

Dear Chevre,

We finished our fifty days of counting the Omer and arrived at Sinai for a splendid city-wide Shavuot celebration. It was a marvelous sight to see people from many different congregations streaming into the Gershman Y for an all-night program of prayer, feasting and learning. There is a tradition to stay awake the entire night of Shavuot because you wouldn't want to be asleep when Torah is being given.

While it's so special to celebrate with the greater Jewish community, there is also something very grounding about coming home to our own small shul. This week our new leadership team gets voted in and I'm excited about working with our leaders and volunteers to build our community. "Jewish community" is a wonderful, vague concept but it is expressed most directly, specifically, meaningfully when we show up again and again in our very own congregation.

We see who is happily expecting a grandchild and who is mourning the loss of a loved one. We see who needs chicken soup or a ride to the doctor. We get to know each other's quirks and strengths and senses of humor. I'm glad to mingle with hundreds of fellow travelers from different congregations, just as our ancestors did on the pilgrimage festivals. And I'm happy to return to our home base where we share a journey through the ups and downs of life.

Many Blessings,

Rabbi Julie

I'M OKAY
A New Leyv Ha-Ir Program

Would you like to talk daily, by phone or email, with a friendly fellow member of Leyv Ha-Ir?  We're expanding our successful trial version to cover the whole congregation.

How does it work?  You will contact the Coordinator who will help match you with your phone/email buddy.  The two of you will then work out when and how you want to communicate.  You'll swap phone numbers of people to call if the first contact doesn't work.

The Coordinator will be Evy Simon. Contact her at 215-561-7474 (home), 215-593-5248 (cell) or evysimon@hotmail.com.   Questions? Ask Evy or call our voicemail at 215-629-1995.

Mission Statement: This simple program is for people who would like to check in with fellow members of LHI every day for friendship and reassurance.

"There's something comforting about having a personal connection."
